drinking straws from natural wheat stems

Staramaki is a social company based in a rural region in Greece that utilizes the most widely produced local product, wheat, to create a viable eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic straws and at the same time create employment opportunities and promote social cohesion.

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming students and professors from Perrotis College of the American Farm School of Thessaloniki to Staramaki in Kilkis.

The visiting group included students from the University of Georgia (UGA), USA, who came to see first-hand how a simple wheat stem can become a natural drinking straw — and how local agricultural production can be transformed into a higher-value circular product.

During the visit, we shared the story behind Staramaki: our work with farmers in Kilkis, our production process, our sustainability mission, and our effort to connect circular economy, rural development and innovation in practice.

It is always inspiring to open our doors to young people studying the future of agri-food, sustainability and entrepreneurship. Their questions, curiosity and fresh perspective remind us why education, research and real production must stay closely connected.

Thank you to Perrotis College, the Αμερικανική Γεωργική Σχολή of Thessaloniki, the professors, the group leader and the students from UGA for visiting us today.

From the field, to the factory, to the glass.
This is where circular economy becomes tangible.

Today we tested one of the most important new pieces of equipment in Staramaki’s production line: our new industrial drying chamber.

For us, drying is not just a technical step.

It is the stage where a natural wheat stem becomes stable, safe, consistent, and ready to become a premium drinking straw.

This new chamber allows us to dry larger volumes with better control, improved hygiene, and more consistent quality across every tray. It is a key investment in scaling production while keeping the product natural, simple, and true to its origin.

A straw made from a stem sounds simple.

But behind that simplicity there is engineering, agriculture, food-safety thinking, process design, and a lot of patient work from our team in Kilkis.

Step by step, Staramaki is moving from a beautiful idea to a scalable rural industry.

Natural materials need industrial discipline.

That is the challenge.

And that is exactly what we are building.

Nothing else matters.

Except, apparently, thousands of single use plastics left in one bin after the concert.

Some materials are used for minutes.
Then they stay for decades.

At Staramaki, we make straws from wheat stems — natural, Greek, and designed not to outlive the memory of the night.

Because it is music that should last forever.
Drinking straws shouldn’t.

Nothing else matters?
Nature does.

At Staramaki, we just installed an industrial solar water heater to help cover the hot water needs of our sterilisation process.

In a period when energy is becoming more expensive, unstable, and political, even small changes in production matter.

For us, it is simple: when you need hot water, it makes more sense to use the Greek sun directly than to use electricity and then turn that electricity back into heat.

This means:

☀️ less energy waste
☀️ lower production cost
☀️ more independence
☀️ smaller footprint for every straw we produce

A straw grown by the sun should also be processed, as much as possible, by the sun.

Down to a science.
Raised to an art.

At Staramaki, a straw is not manufactured from scratch.
It is grown.

The science is in the field, the harvest, the sorting, the cutting, the sterilisation, and the quality control.

The art is in preserving what nature has already designed: a hollow wheat stem, unique in shape, texture, and character.

Not plastic.
Not paper trying to behave like plastic.
A natural object, carefully transformed.

Good morning from Kilkis. 🌾
