Our work in progress: The conversion of what was once a gardeners store into a new summer house located in vouliagmeni, greece. Set at the base of an apartment block, the new house is formed around the retention of the existing concrete structure of the garden store which has been retained for advantages in sustainability, cost and building licensing. The new ‘interior’ spaces are fully opened up to the surrounding verdant subtropical garden, via bifold glazing, and extended out onto external terraces to fully embrace greek outdoor living and connect with the wider coastal area of vouliagmeni and its aleppo pine forest. A planted trellis wraps around the property to provide privacy from overlooking views in addition to further grounding the house in its garden setting and improving the aspects of the adjacent apartment block owners. Terracotta planters are algorithmically distributed throughout the trellis to increase planting density in specific areas for privacy and shade. In other ares the trellis is left open to setup outward views and a connection to the garden. Internally two large pieces of wooden cabinetry provide spatial separation and accommodate a kitchenette, wardrobes, cloaks, media systems, ac units, a bathroom, technical equipment and general storage. In basic terms a new two bedroom 60sqm summer house set in the heart of vouliagmeni is created. #αρχιτέκτονας #αρχιτέκτονες #αρχιτεκτονική #Ελλάδα #Αθήνα #Αττική #Βουλιαγμένη #κατοικία

Solar insolation analysis for our current project for a new house set within a tree copse north of york, uk. Such site analysis is employed to understand the shading effects of the current trees and buildings onsite and to uncover opportunities for solar exposure in relation to concept design development. Analysis values undertaken at +3m above ground level, annual, cumulative, diffuse and direct sky conditions.

A room for the annual Ice Hotel located in Northern Sweden. ‘Vatten Och Drömmar’ translates into English as ‘Water and Dreams’, the title of an essay by philosopher Gaston Bachelard in which the ability of water to give rise to our imagination and shape our dreams is distilled. Made of water; sculpted from compacted snow (snice) and pure ice blocks cut from the River Torne, this room encourages us to bathe in dream states by day and by night. For Bachelard when in the presence of such dormant water as embodied in snow and ice a certain melancholy is experienced,’a melancholy not oppressive but dreamy, slow and calm’. Through the room’s spatial flows and liquidity, we may also be invited to consider the journey which water has made to glaciate here, and the forthcoming deliquescence which will occur during spring when it returns to the River Torne. A movement which may mark a transition in our own lives too. For some the coolth of the room may prompt a freshness in thought or a cathartic experience. For others imbued notions of ice water purity and snow whiteness, may intonate our imagination with the sacred. Conversely we may simply drift off into reverie and float among arctic icebergs ornamented with viscous snow formations such as meringues and cornices. Or, ‘one might just hear the water sleeping’.
