It’s All About the Front Porch.
The porch is one of architecture’s oldest ideas — and one of its most underused. Before air conditioning rewired how we build, the covered porch was both a social threshold and a passive cooling device: it shades the wall, catches the breeze, and places the inhabitant at the edge of public life rather than hidden behind it.
This residence at Las Catalinas, Costa Rica, was the first house we designed in the El Prado neighborhood — and the first to be built there. From the beginning, the design was organized around the porch as the primary gesture: a covered, shaded transition between the intimacy of the home and the activity of the park it faces.
The result is a house that breathes — and a neighborhood that, one porch at a time, builds itself.

Todo comienza en el portal.
El portal es una de las ideas más antiguas de la arquitectura — y una de las más subutilizadas. Antes de que el aire acondicionado transformara nuestra manera de construir, el portal techado cumplía dos funciones esenciales: enfriar la vivienda de forma natural y convertirse en el umbral entre la vida privada y la vida pública.
Esta residencia en Las Catalinas, Costa Rica, fue la primera casa que diseñamos en el barrio El Prado — y la primera en construirse. Desde el inicio, el diseño se organizó alrededor del portal como gesto principal: una transición cubierta y sombreada entre la intimidad del hogar y la actividad del parque que enfrenta.
El resultado es una casa que respira — y un barrio que, portal a portal, se construye a sí mismo.
