We are delighted that Backpack Housing was announced a winner at the 2024 in the ‘Temporary/ Meanwhile Uses’ category in Singapore last week!

The project was a collaboration with .ecologies.design.lab (UEDL) and as part of Housing in Place - supported by Bank of China and Chinachem.

Mongkok contains almost no unused space. Programmes shift and disparate activities overlap - transforming from day to night and from week to week, mediated by temporal structures of ductwork, neon, shopfront screens and market stalls. However, at the scale of a district, there are unforeseen redundancies. As apartment and office blocks are rapidly decommissioned, demolished and rebuilt, they also lie empty while ownership disputes are settled and building permits are obtained. The result is a significant building vacancy rate - despite urgent demand.

These spaces, located across the city, are the site for Backpack Housing. A reconfigurable kit of parts, this system provides a framework through which these spaces can be occupied temporarily - plugging into existing and remaining infrastructure and providing shelter for some of Hong Kong’s most vulnerable residents. Each system is crafted for one person within a particular space, moving with them as they move from transitional to more certain housing. At its most complete, each Backpack provides a safe, private and well-appointed shelter, which can be reconfigured as loose furniture, partitioning systems, or storage if and when required.

Living Museum (work in progress)
An exhibition and learning/workshop space which provides a platform for knowledge exchange where crafts and skills can be disseminated, promoted and updated as knowledge is shared between
students, craftspeople and the local
community.
The architecture of the museum aims to respect the history of the village, merging vernacular means and methods with digital tools.

Sun Room is a finalist in the Architizer A+ Awards!
Architecture students from the University of Hong Kong worked together with local villagers and the last remaining bamboo weaver in Peitian to re-learn, adapt and evolve this traditional process. The result is a community space that provides respite for villagers who work the land during the hot growing season.

Please vote for Sun Room in the Architecture + Learning category
