Nordic European Centre, Singapore
Singapore

Designed by TA.LE Architects

Nordic European Centre (NEC) is an industrial building that sits in the heart of the International Business Park in Singapore. Completed in the 90s, it is now looking tired, and with the growing demand from entrepreneur for new co-working space, the need to re-brand is crucial.

TA.LE Architects are tasked to redesign the façade and common area, giving NEC a forward looking, exciting new design that fosters collaboration and community bonding. The building’s U-shape layout and old linkway skirting the perimeter of the plaza left it underutilized and unappealing. Our goal was to transform the plaza into an urban garden, with a new linkway directly connects the drop off to the main lobby. Most noteworthy are the super-tree pavilions planned within the plaza, which serve as activity nodes equipped with power points for collaborative working or even shelter from the weather.

To address the glare from the western sun at the façade, new sun-shading screens comprised of triangulated perforated aluminum panels, inspired by the client’s corporate logo, were installed. A fresh coat of paint was given to the existing façade panels too. For the lobby design, we seek to provide more space for social events and interaction. The new reception counter is relocated to the side, freeing up the central zone for different usage, such as waiting lounge on typical days, and event space for exhibitions during special occasions.

Parc des Saphirs skating rink
Boischatel, Canada

Designed by ABCP architecture

The Parc des Saphirs project turned part of a wooded area beside the Royal Québec golf course into a city park. The resulting sports, fitness and family linear park now occupies a former Hydro-Québec easement. The main park facilities are an outdoor covered skating rink and service building.

The assignment was to provide a sheltered winter-and-summer space. It has a large roofed-over surface that serves as a skating rink in winter and can be used for dek hockey or basketball in summer.

The designers wanted the structure to be made of wood as much as possible while creating a sense of lightness. The architectural concept is based on the large wood–steel hybrid frame. The glulam structure with its steel tensioning system supports a 28-meter clear span despite being relatively thin.

The biggest innovation in the project is its strategic use of wood. The service building features a light structural frame that works very well for these kinds of spans and should be within many contractors’ budgets. The skating rink cover makes the greatest possible use of glulam with the addition of steel to increase its span while keeping the budget under control.

Tianu - The Revival Project
Mumbai, India

Designed by Studio PKA

Tianu – The Revival Project Context The Estate and the Store Nestled in a corner, on the ground floor of a Victorian Era building in Ballard Estate – the original Central Business District - ‘The Revival Project’ speaks of a desire to recover and respect the past - an ode to architectural heritage in Mumbai. The space was acquired with a large double heighted open floor plate, interjected by a low height mezzanine, boarded up arched fenestrations and devoid of a connect with the street. The project was seen as an opportunity to effectively refurbish a space within a heritage structure – which not only saves space and is economically viable but also recognizes the importance of conserving the remnants of a bygone era.

The brand – a furniture retail outlet - sought to relocate from their existing setup to a new store that would be conducive to their sensibilities, as furniture designers, art connoisseurs and deep admirers of architecture and heritage of the city.

In order to make the space habitable the windows were opened up, the partitions removed, and necessary retrofitting was carried out to ensure structural stability. The frontage on the other hand was designed to not only entice visitors and prospective customers but also activate the street by virtually acting as an extension of the pavement outside – through the wood and glass vestibule that juts inwards and allows elements of the store to percolate out. A level difference in the form of steps invites the user and leads them to the entrance – the vestibule – from where the open floor plate flows and acts as the main retail space which extends up to the cabin at the far end of the store. While a hierarchy of spaces exists, a conscious effort was made for it to be kept to a bare minimum – spaces flow into each other with transitions highlighted either by way of textural and tonal variations in flooring material or semi-permeable partitions. A screen – below the mezzanine – segregates the retail space in two and instantly suggests a division. Conceptualized as a flexible intervention, the cement board partition acts as a backdrop for art and furniture as well as blocks or allows visual access to and from the entrance of the store by way of louvers. The interplay of levels within a heritage structure adds to the character of the space – an insert that breaks the homogeneity of a single plane. A staircase leads up to the mezzanine level which is reserved as the workspace for the in - house design team.

This project was shortlisted at the Inside - World Festival of Interior, retail category.

An the Sweet
Hangzhou, China

Designed by Leo Hu / WJ Design

An The Sweet was founded in 2010 on Nanshan Road, Hangzhou, right next to the famous West Lake. It is named after the owner’s name 'An', meaning “kindness '. It has been recognized by customers for nearly ten years.

In the overall renovation of An The Sweet, the designer transformed the original milky yellow simple wall into a dark facade, supplemented by a golden frame, so that the whole building can echo to the surrounding environment and blend perfectly. We use white and wood as the main tone to create a more natural bright feeling. In order to attract more attention and people, we make the best use of the large arch-shaped floor windows to solve this problem appropriately. Whether at dusk or at night, the indoor activities reflect through the window has become a beautiful scenery on the street.

When walking in as a customer, one may feel relaxing and cheerful. While sitting next to the phoenix trees seeing the light and shadow changes, you may watch people passing by and see the sunlight through the skylight casts on the plants. The gentleness of light and shadow makes you forget the passage of time. You leaned on the sofa quietly, feeling maybe this comfort is just right.

This project was shortlisted at the Inside - World Festival of Interiors, retail category.

Alexandra Palace East Wing Regeneration Project
London, United Kingdom

Designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios

The regeneration of the East Wing of the 'People’s Palace' has breathed new life into a much-loved cultural icon, bringing spaces that have been inaccessible to the public for 80 years back into use. Focussed on the Victorian Theatre, East Court and adjoining areas, some far-reaching interventions were called for, but of paramount importance was the preservation of the evocative and layered character that made these spaces unique – a fragile quality that could have been destroyed by well-meaning repair.

Working in close collaboration with the client, our approach to bringing the theatre back to life was thus a conservation and a business planning challenge. While the theatre is unique in many ways, the London theatre scene is highly competitive, and Ally Pally is a long way from the West End hub. Attracting new audiences to a space that was unknown was a major challenge. Our approach was to focus first on what makes Ally Pally theatre unique – its extraordinary scale, richly evocative interiors and its potential to provide an exceptionally atmospheric but highly flexible space.

The exhibition design here embodies the long history of stage and scenery at the Palace, using a language of demountable, large-scale structures that can be reconfigured to tell future stories as the Palace reassumes its place in contemporary London. Vital to the success of reinventing this space for its many uses, and key to attracting new audiences, was the need to express the sense of fun and spectacle that the Palace has always embodied.

This project is shortlisted on the World Architecture Festival 2019, New and Old category.

Olympic House - International Olympic Comittee HQ
Lausanne, Switzerland

Designed by 3XN and Ittenbrechbuehl

The new Olympic House, located in Parc Louis Bourget in Lausanne, will open in June 2019, during the worldwide celebration of Olympic Day. The Olympic House aims to bring together the IOC staff – 500 employees currently spread across Lausanne in four locations - under one roof at a single site. Following the IOC’s brief, the Olympic House is formed around five key objectives: movement, transparency, flexibility, sustainability, and collaboration, each of which translates the Olympic Movement’s core values into built form.

The building authentically reflects Olympism, the Olympic Movement and the role of the IOC as a catalyst for collaboration in an iconic and transparent way. The project has been approached with the intent to achieve the highest level of integration with the unique natural and historical setting of the park. Developed in close consultation with the local authorities, the Olympic House will offer the region an emblematic architectural landmark and become an important element of the local Louis Bourget public park that welcomes a diverse group of visitors every year.

Olympic House is wrapped in a double layer of glazing with a faceted outer layer reinforcing the building’s movement and a practical inner layer featuring an integrated sunscreen. The design of the building pushes the limits within the glass-façade typology. Utilizing glass in an advanced manner that introduces new montage and assembly methods in curved curtain-wall structures, it features an organic appearance not normally associated with glass buildings. By optimizing the façade to floor plate ratio and creating a fully glazed façade from floor to ceiling, the design brings daylight deep into the building. The interior is designed with minimal structural constraints with an eight-meter column-free zone from the façade into the building resulting in a flexible workspace that encourages to interaction and brings daylight into the building. The Unity Staircase, which references the Olympic Rings, soars the full height of the building and connects the five floors through a central atrium.
This project is shortlisted on the World Architecture Festival 2019, Office category.

The Ian Potter Southbank Centre
Melbourne, Australia

Designed by John Wardle Architects

The new home of the Melbourne Conservatorium Of Music celebrates the activities of music rehearsal and practice – a green room for Melbourne's arts precinct. Outwardly focused and inviting, the building aims to balance the singular concentration required of students with the camaraderie of engaging with others.

The building is a place to rub shoulders with fellow music students, and the artistic milieu of the wider campus and precinct. Multiple vantage points in the conservatorium allow for appreciating the inner workings of music education. The learning and rehearsal spaces, both small and large, are interspersed with bell-shaped portholes, hinged panels and disguised windows that generously exhibit the activity within. A large oculus window into the ground floor orchestral rehearsal space unlocks the traditional vault of music education to reveal its inner realm.

This project is shortlisted on the World Architecture Festival 2019, Higher Education and Research category.

Zaryadye Concert Hall
Moscow, Russia

Designed by TPO Reserve тпо "Резерв"

Zaryadye Concert Hall was designed as part of the urban landscape project Zaryadye Park, which occupies the area of the former Moscow district called Zaryadye.

The building of Concert Hall adjusts the park on the east and interprets its general idea which suggests the park buildings to be hidden to a great extent in the park structure and to open outside with one façade. The belonging to the park glass space structure covers the microclimatic area and large amphitheater on the roof of the Concert Hall. At the same time it forms the entrance area accentuated with the branching support and the inviting square on the north-east.

The east façade allows look into the depth of the foyer, thus emphasizing the “in-built” character of the house. The southern façade is supplied with media screen where translations of the concerts can be watched in the small open-air amphitheater. The foyer envelops the main hall from the eastern and northern sides. It is organized partly along the eastern glassed façade where it develops as spectacular route following the natural site slope towards the river, with long ramps and viewpoints towards the embankment panorama and park with St.Anna Church.

The northern part of the foyer is the key meeting and information zone with central entrance into the main hall, two symmetrically placed stairs to the balcony level and a large staircase leading down to the cloakroom. The rooms of administration on the second floor are partly oriented into the foyer to receive natural light. Cafes and bars are designed as part of the general recreation, distributed to serve different levels. The main hall for 1600 spectators is a natural acoustics space suitable for different kinds of music performance and organized as arena-hall.

This project is shortlisted on the World Architecture Festival 2019, Culture category.
