On this day in 2014, we were honoured to appear on a special edition of the Hong Kong Post stamp series: Collaboration for Quality. The project ‘Star Centre’ in Jeongju, Korea was nominated, the last collaboration with our good friends at RAD.

It only lasted a few years...Being a sunken plaza to a shopping mall, in 2017 we saw the potential to upgrade the facade, opening it up the the outdoor area as well as renovate all external finishes. To our surprise, in 2022 we find the project is in disrepair and mostly dismantled. Shop owners have closed most windows towards the outdoor area. Currently the lower ground plaza looks similar to before we started. In that sense, this project has been a hard lesson for us: We always believed that good design matters and is cherished by citizens. Apparently not...

In 2015 we proposed this elegant double gradient for the balcony detail of ‘Upper Central’. The horizontal classed ribbon reflected the perforation of the balustrade. Unfortunately this scheme wasn’t built despite a 1:1 mock-up and multiple iterations. In the end we developed an equally nice curved glass scheme. However, privacy is so limited in those micro flats of Hong Kong and their limited balconies, people don’t use the area much. The transparent boundary creates a feeling of vertigo versus a more intimate perforated threshold.

On this day in 2015 we received the balcony mock-up panels for ‘Upper Central’. Unfortunately the gradient perforation was later abandoned and replaced by clear glass. So was the colour scheme that changed from white to gold.

Although most of our facade renovation has been dismantled already due to unknown reasons, the canopy to the mall is luckily still exiting. Being a challenge to the engineer since it had to be a cantilever structure off an existing (old) superstructure, it still turned out clean and marks a strong entrance to the mall at Smithfield Walk, Hong Kong.

Adding life to the Lobby of Eastcore. The project is finally finished. It is our first revitalisation project: an industrial to office conversion. It makes our fifth project completed in Hong Kong. Now we hope for relaxation of the Covid restrictions and a restart of business activities in the city.
