Inspiring the Next Generation of Architects at the RIBA Future Architects Programme

It was a privilege for QUAD Studio's Founding Partner, Wai Tang, to participate as a mentor at the RIBA Future Architects Programme. We extend our sincere thanks to Celia Lai and the RIBA Hong Kong Chapter team for the invitation.

Co-hosted by the Faculty of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong and RIBA on 2 September 2026, the programme brought together more than 100 architecture students and graduates as they prepared to take their next steps into professional practice.

Following an inspiring keynote address by Keith Griffiths, Founder and Chairman of Aedas, Wai joined Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, Co-Founder of Bean Buro, and Yutaka Yano of Sky Yutaka for a discussion on Emerging Architects & Startups.

One of the most engaging topics raised by students was:

"When is the right time to start your own practice?"

While each mentor's journey was different, there was a strong consensus on three key principles:

• Gain valuable experience within a respected design practice.
• Develop a clear manifesto and set of guiding values.
• Find the right partners who can help shape a studio aligned with your architectural ambitions.

Most encouraging of all was the enthusiasm, curiosity, and engagement shown by the students. Their thoughtful questions and passion for architecture give us great confidence in the future of the profession.

We look forward to seeing the impact this next generation of architects will make on our cities, communities, and the built environment.

Shaping the Future of Mobility: Aurecon and QUAD Studio Supporting the Northern Link Spur Line

Since early 2026, Aurecon, in association with QUAD Studio, has been supporting the Northern Link Spur Line through Planning and Advisory Services.
As part of Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis vision, the project will enhance connectivity between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, improve journey times, and strengthen integration across the regional rail network.

Specere Tower Standing Proud in the Longgang Skyline

Located in Longgang, Shenzhen, the façade of the Ganghong Headquarters Office Tower is now nearing completion. Positioned opposite the landmark SOM-designed tower within Longgang Tian'an Cyber Park, these two iconic 200-metre towers have emerged as a distinctive gateway to the Longgang District.

With its elegant form and striking presence, Specere Tower is set to become a new architectural landmark for the district and will officially open to the public in Fall of 2027.

Chengdu NBD Centre Taking Shape on the Chengdu Skyline

Following its competition-winning design in 2021, the NBD Centre is rapidly taking shape, with the initial phase of façade installation now underway. Located within Guixi Ecological Park in Chengdu's Jiaozi Park Business District, the striking 120-metre twin towers overlook the Jinjiang River and the city's evolving skyline.

The development will serve as a hub for the digital and cultural industries, accommodating a diverse mix of digital media offices, cultural workspaces, digital art galleries, and exhibition venues. At its heart, a vibrant sunken plaza will attract visitors throughout the year, creating a dynamic destination for digital media enthusiasts and the wider community.

With the façade scheduled for completion in Winter 2026, the NBD Centre is set to become a new architectural landmark for Chengdu, contributing to the ongoing transformation of the Jiaozi Park Business District into a leading centre for innovation, culture, and commerce.

How can architecture create a true civic heart for a growing city?

At Populus X in Pinghu, Shenzhen, our design response was guided by two simple principles: porosity and connectivity.

Rather than creating a conventional shopping centre, we envisioned a new "City Living Room"—an open, permeable, and welcoming destination that seamlessly connects people, streets, nature, culture, and commerce.

A network of interconnected terraces, courtyards, landscaped gardens, and semi-outdoor spaces allows movement both vertically and horizontally throughout the development, encouraging social interaction and community engagement at every level.

Located at the centre of a rapidly evolving transportation hub, Populus X is designed to extend the public realm and become part of daily life for the people of Pinghu—a place to meet, relax, exercise, and connect.

More than a building, it is a vision for a people-focused urban centre where architecture serves as a catalyst for community.

RIBA Hong Kong Fellows’ Forum 2026 | Reflecting on Practice, Leadership and the Future of Architecture

QUAD Studio was honoured to participate in the RIBA Hong Kong Chapter Fellows’ Forum on 15 June 2026, alongside an inspiring group of architects and industry leaders.

We extend our thanks to the RIBA Hong Kong Chapter for hosting, to Angeliki Koliomichou for moderating the panel discussion, and to Celia Lai and Christopher Lye for opening and closing the event.

The forum featured a compelling presentation by Keith Griffiths, Founder & Principal of Aedas, titled “Connected and Porous Low Energy Cities,” offering a forward-looking vision for sustainable and integrated urban design.

Our Founding Partner, Wai Tang, shared his presentation “Vitruvian Rhapsody,” reflecting on his journey toward RIBA Fellowship—shaped by mentorship, collaboration, and the ongoing development of the Collective Polymath.

The panel discussion also benefited from the valuable insights of Ruffina Thilakartne and Nelson Chen, contributing to a rich exchange on leadership, advocacy, and the evolving impact of AI on architectural practice.

As the industry enters a new era shaped by emerging technologies, the role of architects continues to expand—requiring both critical judgement and the ability to meaningfully curate information.

Mentorship remains central. As AI becomes an increasingly powerful creative tool, guiding the next generation to use it responsibly and effectively will be essential.

Architecture Design Showcase | Hong Kong Design Institute

QUAD Studio would like to thank Henry Chan for inviting our Founding Partner, Wai Tang, to the HKDI Architectural Design Showcase 2026.

It was encouraging to see a shift in how students are approaching their thesis projects — engaging with complex challenges ranging from modular systems to socially driven topics such as mobility and rehabilitation. Translating these ambitions into resolved architectural proposals remains a demanding task, and many projects reflected the difficulty of balancing concept, ex*****on, and context.
While some students struggled to fully resolve their ideas, others demonstrated strong potential, with room for further refinement. A common observation was that in the pursuit of a workable solution, some lost sight of their original conceptual intent.

Notable projects included Dominic Choi’s visually compelling presentation and Alistar Wong’s modular project impressed with its strong form and massing.
Special thanks to Unit Tutor Simon Chan and to fellow panelists Celia Lai, Roger Wu, Peter Hasdell, and Sylvia Lam for the engaging and insightful discussions.

QUAD Studio at Build4Asia Dialogues | Moments Matters

QUAD Studio extends gratitude to Alan Chang and Build4Asia for inviting our Partner of Interiors Sean Leung to share his vision of designing spaces that truly matter.

Sean emphasized that interiors are not just about aesthetics—they shape how people live, connect, and remember. From homes and hotels to F&B venues and workplaces, design must be:

• Meaningful: nurturing comfort, well-being, and connection
• Memorable: evoking emotion through layout and materiality
• Functional: ensuring smooth circulation and durability
• Reasonable: using space and resources wisely

Thoughtful design transforms every visit into an effortless, lasting experience—moments that matter.

During the panel, Sean discussed with moderator Alan Chang the challenges of scale in Hong Kong’s smaller apartments. He explained that regardless of size, his approach focuses on creating communal spaces with flexibility—movable partitions that adapt to different uses. For Sean, great spaces are achieved through creative design rather than cost, encouraging designers to think beyond convention and embrace evolving technologies in our ever-changing world.
