On the quiet temple grounds of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, I found this ancient Japanese juniper (Ibuki) that’s been standing here for over six centuries (600 years).
Its weathered trunk and sweeping branches carry the quiet dignity of age, shaped by wind, rain, and generations of Zen caretakers.
Once planted during the Muromachi period, this tree has witnessed the passing of countless monks, seasons, and stories.
It’s more than a tree, it’s a living piece of Kyoto’s soul, a reminder that strength and grace can grow side by side through time.
