Roger Leevers Retrospective
Roger Leevers is an artist of significant talent and experience. For more than half a century he has exercised his talents and created art that reflects his connection to the sea. A retrospective of his life works will be exhibited at the Gallery 35 High st. Fremantle
As a young man he sailed competitively, worked long shifts on the Abrolhos Cray boats and trawlers in the gulf of Carpentaria. Together with his father Graham he sailed their yacht Aloha the oldest sailing vessel on the WA coast. He and Graham were legendary for theirs skills and daring.
Roger developed his skills as a student at the James Street Art School in the early 60”s, when the school was at its most productive ,under the guidance of GeorgeHaynes. Roger has remained a respected member and close associate of the artists who developed at this school.
All through his life the sea, the boats, the wildlife and the waves have inspired his work. There will be many examples on display in the current exhibition.
As part of the excitement after the America’s Cup Roger became something of a cult figure for his chalk boards which were notable for the sharp wit and the illustrations of our politicians, Burke and co. who with a rogue’s gallery of businessmen became know as WA Inc. All under the guise of announcing the lates boutique beer. These chalkboards are in the possession of a number of collectors and have been the subject of thesis and numerous lectures and presentations by Emeritus Professor Richard Read , University of WA.
Roger was selected as Ship’s Artist for the Endeavour Replica World tour. He produced a body of work that has been widely exhibited and well receivede. Roger has extensive nautical experience that he brings to his work with draftmans’s skill and often a subtile sense of humour.
This is a chance to purchase something you and others will treasure.
The exhibition runs from May 8 to May 24 at Gallery 35on High st. Fremantle The opening is at 6 pm on the 8th and should be a must for anyone interested in sailing or nautical art.
