As urbanites get more and more isolated from the natural world, their desire to maintain some sort of connection has inspired creative new interior design ideas like moss walls to fill their needs. Moss walls are a beautiful and relatively low-maintenance way to bring some beautiful nature into your home.

Though walls like these can be expensive to install, they are easy to maintain – especially if they use lichen instead of moss. As long as you maintain the appropriate indoor humidity and keep them out of the sun, you won't need to water them.

Ever wanted to live in the Middle-earth? Embrace yourselves, your geekiest dream may be just one house away. A company called Green Magic Homes came up with an idea to build tiny prefabricated houses that look exactly like Hobbit holes and can be assembled by 3 people in a few days time!

Just like Hobbit holes, these houses are designed to exist under a layer of soil and turf and can even produce food if you decided to grow some veggies on the roof. Heck, if you are not a fan of greens, they can even be covered with sand or snow, depending on where you live.

If you have a vision of your own, this company can make it happen as their modular system offers endless possibilities of design. Cozy, eco-friendly houses that neatly blend in with nature, I mean you don’t even need to be a Tolkien fan to appreciate the idea!

Fuji Kindergarten, a kindergarten located in Tachikawa, Japan, was built as a ring around a Zelkova tree with a storied past. A glass, steel and wood construction closer to the tree itself lets children play and explore in the kindergarten’s yard.

The tree, which is about 50 years old, was nearly uprooted during a typhoon. It became totally lifeless and gray before, against everyone’s expectations, it recovered and became healthy once again. Before the kindergarten was even built in 2007, the tree was a popular place for kids to climb and hang out.

Now, the surrounding building’s windows face inwards at the tree so the children inside can see it all the time. For recess, or when they’re waiting for their bus, the kids can play on the platforms around the tree. An adult would only see 2 floors on the structure, but small meter-high levels give children places to explore where adults might not fit.

We’re Jiri and Josipa, a couple currently living in Plzen, Czech Republic and we’d like to share our lamps with you. We are trying to achieve a beautiful atmospheric feeling in the room, by adding a complex sculpture into it. During the day, it sits like a mysterious object in its place, engraved with intricate lines. In the evening, it shows its true magic: a game of light and shadow playfully drawn along the walls, projected from a beacon of light.

We tried and built a laser cutter ourselves. It took Jiri couple of months to order all the pieces and build the machine. It was sometimes fun, sometimes frustrating, but an overall educative process. In the meantime, we experimented with different light sources and bulbs. Our first lamp did not project silhouettes. We came to them with time.

In late summer last year, the laser cutter was fully functional and we had our first improved tree of life lamp ready to share with friends. Until today, we managed to create several more designs, and further improve the initial ones. Our first series is united by tree of life theme, and our second series is about geometry and symbols. Third one is yet to come, so stay tuned!

At a charity event held in the University of Cambridge, Paris-based digital projection artist Miguel Chevalier turned the university’s 16th-century King’s College Chapel into a stunning backdrop for his hypnotizing light show. As each speaker at the ‘Dear World… Yours, Cambridge’ event spoke about their topic, the chapel was filled with projections that artfully illustrated their points.

The projections, specially designed for the famous chapel’s interior, at times either emphasized or hid the building’s extraordinary architecture. The chapel is one of the best examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the world, so its ornate decorations were worth seeing even before they served as a backdrop for Chevalier’s projections.

These beautiful twin office towers in Abu Dhabi borrow from ancient Arabic architectural elements to create an innovative way to shield themselves from sunlight. The two towers are overlaid by a mechanized geometric “skin” with triangular panels that follow the sun to block it out.

The sunscreen design by Aedas Architects was inspired by the masharabiya, a beautiful form of ornate sunscreen that shields windows in the Arab world from glaring sunlight and prying eyes. The screens, controlled by computers. open, close and even travel horizontally to block the sun. The 145m-tall towers underneath, which were completed in 2012, are covered in glass, so the sunscreens reduce sunlight-generated heat in the building by at least 50% and probably help with the air conditioning bill as well!

Stefano Boeri, an Italian architect with an affinity for innovative green structures, is set to build a 117m-tall (384ft) apartment tower in Lausanne, Switzerland, that will be the first building in the world to be covered in evergreen trees.

The 36-story green tower, aptly named “La Tour des Cedres” (The Tower of Cedars), will be home to more than 100 trees, 6,000 shrubs and 18,000 plants spread over roughly 3,000 square meters of green space. The plants will protect the apartments inside from harsh winds, dust, and noise pollution, and will offer a more pleasant view of the city.

This tower will be the second project of its kind by Boeri. He previously designed two 112m towers in Milan as well.

In a mesmerizing collaboration between mankind and the elements, this 230-foot sea-organ in Croatia harnesses the energy of the winds and waters of the Adriatic sea to create random but soothing and harmonized notes.

The sea-organ, or “morske orgulje” as it’s know in Croatian, was designed by Croatian architect Nikola Basic and opened to the public in 2005. Water and wind enter through holes at the bottom of the steps, where they are channeled into resonating chambers. The sounds from these chambers exit through holes along the highest steps.

The site is a popular lunch-spot for tourists and locals alike, but it wasn’t always this way. After being completely devastated during WWII, the reconstruction of Zadar left it full of ugly concrete constructions, and among these was a long concrete shoreline. I think we can all agree that this organ was a huge improvement! Scroll down to hear how it sounds!

Argentinian architect Aldana Ferrer Garcia has created an extending window concept that allows apartment-dwellers to enjoy the sky from their oft-cramped quarters. The “More Sky” windows all swing or otherwise extend out from the wall to create cozy seated alcoves.

Garcia writes that the project “provides visual relief, access to sunlight and fresh air for small apartments” and is a response to “current needs in densely populated cities.”
