'Rare Beauty'

When was the last time you saw a butterfly? As we celebrate this season of creation during September we become more aware of what is happening around us in nature. This is a peacock butterfly and it was gathering nectar from the sedum flower. One thing we know from the summer of 2024 is that butterflies have been so scarce. This is the first one I got a chance to get a photo of this year.

A monitoring scheme by our National Biodiversity Data Centre found an overall 35% decline in the butterfly population between 2008 and 2021. One of the main causes is a loss of habitat, as is the case with other wildlife. This percentage will have jumped considerably for 2024.

Another factor this year for so few butterflies is cooler temperatures. Met Eireann have told us that in Ireland it has been the coldest summer since 2015. Let’s hope that we see some more butterflies during this month of September.

The village of Ballingeary near Gougane Barra in West Cork had an interesting feature in their village, turn into something they had not expected. A bird box became a bee box!!

A swarm of bees had taken residence in a bird box in the village of Ballingeary. So instead of some birds building a nest, it was the bees who decided this was to become their home! So the bees yesterday were transferred to a bigger and more suitable beebox. The roof of the bird box was removed to give easier access. Each section of comb was carefully removed and the bees transferred to a bigger box.
Nature continues to fascinate and remind us of the presence of God all around us.
Photo was taken by beekeeper Donal Kelleher and used with permission.

My dad has bees.Today I went to his house and he showed me all of the honey he had gotten from the hives. He took the lid off of a 5 gallon bucket full of honey and on top of the honey there were 3 little bees, struggling. They were covered in sticky honey and drowning. I asked him if we could help them and he said he was sure they wouldn't survive. Casualties of honey collection I suppose.
I asked him again if we could at least get them out and kill them quickly, after all he was the one who taught me to put a suffering animal (or bug) out of its misery. He finally conceded and scooped the bees out of the bucket. He put them in an empty Chobani yogurt container and put the plastic container outside.
Because he had disrupted the hive with the earlier honey collection, there were bees flying all over outside.
We put the 3 little bees in the container on a bench and left them to their fate. My dad called me out a little while later to show me what was happening. These three little bees were surrounded by all of their sisters (all of the bees are females) and they were cleaning the sticky nearly dead bees, helping them to get all of the honey off of their bodies. We came back a short time later and there was only one little bee left in the container. She was still being tended to by her sisters.
When it was time for me to leave we checked one last time and all three of the bees had been cleaned off enough to fly away and the container was empty.
Those three little bees lived because they were surrounded by family and friends who would not give up on them, family and friends who refused to let them drown in their own stickiness and resolved to help until the last little bee could be set free.
Bee Sisters. Bee Peers. Bee Teammates.
We could all learn a thing or two from these bees.
Bee kind always.~

As the blackbird and other birds build their nests and sit on eggs, it coincides with the beautiful energy of spring and easter. Easter is all about hope, new beginnings, new life and taking small steps forward in hope. It is about believing in ourselves, believing in love and kindness and being open to God’s blessings in our lives.

Many return to work today but the journey of Easter is for 6 weeks. The reason for this is to give us every chance to celebrate all good news but especially yours💕💕
