Caherhurley Nursery

Caherhurley Nursery Herbaceous plants that add a splash of colour to your garden. 100% home-grown, 100% Irish. Certified organic. Grown outdoors on a windy mountain slope.

Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays in Spring and early summer. Visit us at: V94 K3E3 Some of the advantages of our range of plants are:

1.Only the strongest and best varieties are selected by us for growing at our nursery. We found that many plant varieties available in Ireland are just unsuitable for our climate: In some cases frost can kill them, but often dampness in winters cau

ses a lot of trouble. Then there’s the problem of poor performing plants that looked so good when purchased. Many varieties don’t flower as abundantly as they would in other, less weather-battered, more protected parts of Europe. We thought we ought to try to do something about this by offering varieties that can cope with the more challenging Irish situation.

2.By growing our plants in the harsh conditions of our windy mountain slope, without any protection from glasshouses or polytunnels, we give them a far better chance to survive challenging circumstances anywhere. They are much better adapted to the extremes of the Irish climate than the few-months-hardened-off polytunnel-grown plants out of the modern fast-crop mass-production nurseries (often situated in sheltered areas) which have been ‘hardened off’ for only a few months. Our plants were outside all their young lives.

3.Our plants are grown to certified organic standards (IOFGA licence 4308) without chemicals or artificial fertilisers. They are grown slowly into compact, strong, fresh and healthy looking plants, waiting to burst out into something wonderful in your garden. Most of our plants have been growing a year longer than is usual in nurseries. This results in many growing shoots per plant. Buying certified Organic plants is the only way to ensure they are not treated with chemicals that are harmful for bees, other insects, wildlife and the wider environment.

4.Our range of plants is beyond the usual. They are different from common everyday plants: we mainly grow plants with a natural appearance. We like real, true beauty. Not all popular, newly introduced plants are as good as promised by their commercial developers and in many cases old, almost forgotten varieties perform better.

5.You can split some of our plants into 2 to 4 pieces to plant out in your garden, straight away as you purchase them. These plants have lots of growing shoots since they have been growing in our nursery for a year longer than most other plants offered in Ireland. This means more plants for your money.

PROPAGATION SKILLS.
Tomorrow, Sunday, Caherhurley Nursery is scheduled to give a demonstration at the Clare Garden Festival in Ennis. It's about the 7 ways we propagate certified organic herbaceous perennial plants in our nursery. Ireland has not many nurseries left where propagation is done on the nursery itself because it's far more profitable for nurseries to buy in plugs or young plants from abroad. (That's why you see the same plants everywhere.) Because his of this, a lot of propagation skills, craftmanship, experience, and knowledge get lost. But tomorrow, there's a chance to see how we still propagate plants at Caherhurley. At Caherhurley, we propagate plants ourselves. We're passionate about it, and it's the only way to grow better and more natural varieties with a subtle beauty, varieties that are different from what's available everywhere else. This includes reliable garden classics that have gone out of fashion. You will be available to refresh and expand your knowledge of propagation tomorrow. This might come in handy when you want to propagate unusual plants in your garden, varieties that you purchased from Caherhurley over the last 25 years.

Due to my (Gert) medical issues, I can't be at the demonstration. My colleague Hayley Connely will host the presentation tomorrow. Together, Hayley and I wrote the script for the demonstration. Hayley will give a lively presentation. Like myself, she's a no-nonsense person. Propagation is merely a matter of common sense. No frills tomorrow. There is no need for a 'masterclass': in propagation, gardeners do what intuition tells us. Also, on the festival day, in a different session, Hayley will tell about seeds, in which she debunks current myths surrounding seeds.

On the day of the festival, Elisabeth and I will be at our nursery to welcome you, as usual, from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Come and say hello to us after visiting the festival.

Possibly, gardeners will wonder why we're not going to plant fairs with our plants anymore. You deserve an explanation.

1 . First of all, our medical condition doesn't allow us anymore to bring 200 or more crates with plants to an event. Elisabeth and I we both can only do light jobs. I still can welcome visitors to our nursery.

2. Seriously, where would we get the time to go to plant fairs? A nursery like ours, where we grow all 1200 unusual varieties ourselves (and not from bought in plugs), has to spend all time, energy, enthusiasm, and resources to propagate and grow plants. Everything spent on plant fairs would come at a cost: less quality. We think Ireland deserves quality, so we don't bother with plant fairs anymore.

3. Many gardeners prefer to visit our nursery, where you can see all 1200 unusual varieties. In our nursery, you can share your enthusiasm for better plants with us, and we would have time to advise you. A visit to Caherhurley is a unique experience.

4. Most Caherhurley Nursery plants might stand out for their subtle natural beauty, but they would be totally overlooked at plant fairs with many large plants with straight-into-your-face beauty and by attention-seeking large flowers in bright colours. Our plants would be totally snowed under by so much flower power. Our plants will shine in a different setting: our nursery.

It's hard for a small nursery like ours to keep going, because not every gardener would know about us: they don't see us at plant fairs. Still, we welcome an increasing number of loyal visitors to our nursery, recommended by friends, who come regularly to load their boots full with unusual varieties of Caherhurley plants. Times seem to have changed: many gardeners with open minds don't follow the crowds anymore, and they prefer the quiet, relaxing atmosphere of a visit to Caherhurley. Caherhurley, where plants still get time to grow. Where else would you get so many unusual plants for so little money? Change comes from the grassroots: you, the loyal visitors to Caherhurley. Thanks to you, Caherhurley exists. Together, we can change Ireland, one plant at the time.

Processing the gathered material for basal cuttings. Once processed, we stick the basal cuttings into trays with a special substrate: we mix seed compost, perlite, and horticultural sand. The trays are placed under cloches until the cuttings are rooted. We do this to prevent the cuttings from evaporating too much and drying out. We're happy to show the cloches in our propagation area and answer questions during your next visit to our nursery.

Subtle natural beauty. That's what we're looking for at Caherhurley Nursery. Isn't it a pleasure to see the young flowering shoots of Tiarella wherryi uprising, together. The flowers have a soft colour, and the leaves look natural. Isn't this much more beautiful than today's modern popular varieties of Tiarella and Heuchera, with their attention seeking obscene leaf colours? To me, natural beauty is essential in crafting a well-balanced garden. And everywhere else where we place plants.

How we prepare plants for taking basal cuttings. It's essential to prepare plants now: long before we actually take the basal cuttings. Tomorrow, I'll publish part 2 .

Coming Sunday, Hayley will give a demonstration at the Clare Garden Festival of the 7 ways we propagate hardy herbaceous perennials at Caherhurley. It's a no- nonsense presentation. There is no need to follow an expensive 'masterclass'. All you need is using your common sense, and everyone has this. I was scheduled to give this demonstration, and I was looking forward to it. But my health issues let me down. Hayley is better in explaining propagation than me anyway. Enjoy the show! Our nursery is also open on the day of the Clare Garden Festival. Come and say hello to Elisabeth and me at our nursery after visiting the festival. Caherhurley, where else would you get so many unusual varieties of plants for so little money?
