Design Tips for Small Rooms- Banish the “Dolls’ House Syndrome”

With new builds in Ireland getting smaller (thanks to rising construction costs and tighter site yields), it’s easy to feel like you’re living in a dolls’ house. But clever design can make even the tiniest room feel spacious and stylish.

Here are some of my go-to tips to banish the “Dolls’ House Syndrome”:

✅ Keep it light – avoid over-furnishing, less really is more.
✅ Choose multi-functional pieces (think ottomans with storage).
✅ Elevate the eye with floor-to-ceiling curtains or bold vertical art.
✅ Stick to a calm, minimalist palette—too many colours or patterns shrink a room.
✅ Declutter & conceal – use vertical and hidden storage wherever possible.

Altstadt Hotel Vienna – A Designer’s Dream
Travel has always been one of my greatest passions, and I’m drawn to stay in places that feel anything but ordinary. One Christmas, I discovered a true gem: the Altstadt Hotel in a 19th-century townhouse in Vienna.

On arrival, we sank into a window seat, watching snow drift gently over a nearby church steeple, while a fire roared and Prosecco was served with breakfast — pure magic.

Each of the 62 rooms and suites is uniquely designed, and the hotel’s walls are lined with contemporary art — including original works by Andy Warhol. It’s an inspiring blend of history, creativity, and comfort.

For me, this hotel embodies everything I love: characterful, sophisticated, artistic, historic, cosy, colourful, and quirky.

Hamptons Inspiration
Currently working on some fresh design proposals and loving the return to one of my favourite styles — Hamptons coastal luxury.

This look was always a hit when I worked in Dubai, and I’m happy to reimagine it for Irish homes — soft tones, natural textures, and that effortless, breezy elegance.

Next step: sourcing fabrics! I'm leaning towards crushed linens in pale grey and cream for the window treatments — light, relaxed, and timeless. I’ll keep you posted on what I find.
