JCA Architects

JCA Architects JCA Architects is a mutil-disciplined Architecture and Conservation practice based in Cork city and Dunboyne, Co. Meath, Ireland. Meath.

Jack Coughlan Architects is an established multi-disciplinary architectural practice with offices in Cork City and Dunboyne, Co. Founded by Jack Coughlan in 1985 as an architectural practice producing contemporary designs, JCA has expanded to incorporate the disciplines of architectural conservation, retail and passive house design. The in-house expertise in all these areas allows JCA to provide f

ull design and project management services from concept stage to completion. JCA is a vibrant practice with a broad skill base comprising architects, project managers, architectural conservation consultants, architectural technologists and graphic artists with supporting administration providing a comprehensive and rapid design and execution process. JCA is an award-winning RIAI Grade 1 Conservation Practice having developed a wide range of experience in various areas of conservation and provides an exceptionally high level of expertise within the practice. A fundamental first step is the understanding of the building. Once achieved, JCA can approach a design or intervention with confidence, based on many years of conservation experience in combination with the ethos of contemporary design that the practice is committed to. Indeed, JCA’s strength has been found to be a combination of conservation with a contemporary intervention. JCA projects establish the credibility of its design philosophy: contemporary, appropriate, sensitive, functional, sustainable and economical. Many of these criteria can only be fully tested by interaction with the end-user. As the client’s role has a major influence on the design outcome, the management of that relationship is critical. JCA has a very strong track record where, for an architectural practice, it has a significant repeat business. Retail is one area where JCA has established a strong client relationship over a decade, with repeat projects in Ireland, Germany, Holland, Austria and Belgium. This body of work has resulted in JCA building up a wide base of experience and expertise in the ever changing retail design field. Our work in Europe is undertaken in collaboration with local partners, design team colleagues, contractors and specialist sub-contractors and carried out by teams led by a Project Director who has hands on delivery of the project. JCA’s commitment to sustainability includes appropriate site planning, selection of Green Rated materials, careful design of the building envelope, passive and active energy conservation and generation, use of renewable energy sources, optimising natural ventilation and daylight, water conservation and harvesting, air tightness testing and thermal imaging of buildings.

Celebrating 10 years of Primark in Italy!!

Over the past decade, Primark has made a strong mark in the Italian retail landscape, and we at JCA Architects are proud to have played a part in that journey. Working closely together on a number of projects across Italy has been a fantastic experience, built on collaboration, creativity, and shared ambition.

Today’s UK-Ireland Summit took place at Fota House, Fota Island, Co. Cork

Fota House was originally built as a Hunting Lodge c.1760, altered and enlarged as the main residence of Smith-Barry family c.1825 by Architect Sir Richard Morrison and William Vitruvius Morrison.

JCA Architects have overseen four phases of conservation works over the last five years for the , with as main contractor. The works have included the repair and renewal of the main slated roofs to main house and pavilions, with full re-slating using the salvaged existing slate, and the renewal of complex lead parapet gutters, all under a specialist temporary roof to protect the house and the works. Two phases of conservation rendering and stonework repairs to main house and pavilions using advanced stone repair techniques of the delicate Cork white limestone, and the replacement of cement-based renders in favour of ruled out lime flat work, as well as specialist stucco repair to the long gallery. The most recent phase has included roof and render repairs to north wing including the rare octagonal game larder.

JCA Architects are nearing completion on a phase of works to the East Wing of the Sirius Arts Centre with Moroney Conservation and support from the Irish Georgian Society. This phase features the reinstatement of a historic chimney and 2 no. barrel dormer rooflights which had been lost. Like previous phases at the Sirius usage of historic images and original Salvin drawings proved pivotal in determining the items’ original dimensions and construction methods making their reinstatements as authentic as possible.

JCA congratulates The Heritage Council, recipient of one of Europe’s most prestigious Awards in the heritage field, The Europa Nostra for the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme in recognition of the cultural value of traditional farm buildings

JCA are delighted that our project, the Jockeys Weigh Room, was chosen as the venue for the presentation of the award by Commissioner Michael McGrath.

Ballindenisk has a long tradition of hosting public equestrian sporting events with the first point-to - point horse races held in 1926. The Jockeys Weigh Room was constructed in 1927 as a lightweight timber framed structure on a concrete base and clad in corrugated galvanised iron. The races would have over the years attracted close on 100,000 people and many of the top jockeys, trainers, and horses over the near 100 years. There is an internal hut in the building, used for selling the race cards, and holding a record of the “going” and weather for many of the past races.

We are honored that the Mercy Hospital Cancer Care Centre has have received the Cork Business Association Better Building award in the Heritage, Conservation and Sustainability category.

The centre at 9 D**e Parade is a state-of –the art building, designed by the exceptional team at JCA Architects.

The design and renovation of the building required the architects to produce a building that is dedicated to meeting the needs of patients in a comforting setting, while honouring the buildings original eighteenth century design.

We are proud to be able to provide vital psychological support to patients of the Mercy as they navigate their cancer treatment, and this building offers a beautiful, serene space which does not feel clinical but is conveniently located close to the hospital.

Congratulations JCA Architects, thank you for your exceptional work and to all that made it possible. Special thanks to Ross Building & Maintenance Solutions Ltd & Niall Walley - Deasy Walley Partnership.

We congratulate our neighbors, the Mercy University Hospital Cork who received a special merit award for the Mercy Hospital Mansion House entrance restoration.
