Soil Savers had our industrial shredder out on this sunny Saturday running on the portable, standalone battery power station. Great fun was had shredding cardboard to use as carbon-rich ‘browns’ in a variety of composting systems. Plus we had a visit from with their electric cargo bike and trailer 😍 and stopped at during Record Store Day to refuel afterwards 🎶

Soil Savers are funded by the Shared Island Climate Action Fund and Cork Community Bikes are funded by the Climate Action Fund from and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications 📦

Thank you for Community Garden helping us plant vetch seeds on the back bed in today!

Vetch is a fantastic cover crop from the legume family. Cover crops are plants that are good for covering areas of bare soil. Bare soil loses nutrients and structure so cover crops help keep it healthy.

Vetch also fixes nitrogen in the soil so it improves as well as protects soil! Other ground cover crop options are clover, phacelia and rye 🌱

A gorgeous morning on with - we talk all types of compost, dug in bokashi compost, shredded cardboard, shared zines, wrote poetry and gave our Joraform tumbler a twirl🌀 all things compost, curious and q***r 🤎🪱

Playing with our latest toy! We got an industrial shredder for shredding cardboard to have a readily available source of carbon. We’re currently experimenting using it in making different types of compost.

The Hyper Shredder is from and funded by the Shared Island Climate Action Fund from and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications 📦

We’re looking forward to continuing our composting adventures in 2026 ✨ a few snaps from our winter Solstice collaboration and celebration! Wreath and collage making, intention setting with alder cone ink and cardboard tearing and garlic planting 🤎

Soil Savers, meet Agnetha our new compost tumbler 🤎 so called after one of the ABBA singers, as she (the tumbler) is also Swedish 🇸🇪

She’s all set up in her new home on TEST SITE! Soil Savers were delighted to receive funding from the Shared Island Climate Action Fund from recently. The tumbler (a Joraform JK400) is one of the first pieces of equipment we obtained using this funding.

Thanks for everyone who came by yesterday to get her set up and filled.

The Community Garden was also onsite yesterday. If you want to get involved in the garden contact Maebh [email protected] or 086 829 5632.

Soil Savers are going to be at TEST SITE this Saturday, 11am to 1pm! We’ll be gathering leaves nearby to make leaf compost and store as an extra carbon source.

If there’s time/interest, we’ll also build a dead hedge (a fence built with cut down buddleia and provide a wildlife habitat while slowly decomposing). The Community Garden will also be onsite so plenty to get involved with!

The magic of compost ✨

Both photos show the same soil from . The first photo is soil conditioned with bokashi and leaf compost, crumbly and loose (what you want for healthy soil 🤎). The second is the soil before, compacted and clay-like (not ideal growing conditions).

Compost worms differ from the earthworms you find in your garden. These will eat your food scraps and their poo (aka worm castings or vermicast) is compost. Bacteria breaks down the scraps and bedding (paper/carbon/leaves) then the worm’s digestive systems fully decompose it into nutrient rich organic matter. 🪱

If you keep your worms happy, they
will regularly reproduce and increase their population so they can process more. And you can then share a handful of your worms with a friend to start their own worm farm!

We think all composting is hot, but this method literally is 60 degrees Celsius! 🔥 Mix “greens” (like veggie peels, coffee grounds, and grass clippings) with “browns” (like dry leaves, cardboard, and straw) in 1:2 or 1:3 ratio. Pile it up so it’s 1 metre high and wide, keep it moist like a wrung-out sponge, and turn it every few days to keep air flowing. You’ll have ready to use compost in a matter of weeks.

A good option for a large amount of material and for garden material that has gone to seed as the heat kills the seeds so they don’t randomly sprout when you use your compost.
