We are delighted to share that the Le Chéile Building at Munster Technological University Cork has been awarded the Better Building Award for Best New Development by Cork Business Association (CBA). The building houses the campus’s student engagement office – AnSEO – and The Academic Learning Centre.

The new 6,060m² Learning Resource Centre provides enhanced options for student support, industry engagement, entrepreneurship, and research and innovation. It also provides new options for hosting events and conferences and includes a double height café at ground floor level. The completed three storey building, along with its pedestrian plaza, creates a new landmark and forms the new front door to the campus for students and visitors arriving to the Bishopstown campus.

Rebecca Ryan of Scott Tallon Walker Architects led the JJ Rhatigan & Company contractor design team in the detailed design and delivery of this project, developed through Public Private Partnership under Project Ireland 2040.

The Awards ceremony was attended by Director, David Flannery, who leads our Cork studio.

Scott Tallon Walker Architects is proud to have led the architectural design of the now-completed new Cystic Fibrosis In-Patient Unit at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital.

Delivered within a live acute hospital campus, this 20-bed unit provides each patient with a private en-suite isolation room and access to dedicated treatment and support spaces, all carefully designed to promote comfort, dignity, and recovery.

From start to finish, we worked closely with Beaumont Hospital, the Cystic Fibrosis Hope Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, and our partners Elliott Group, O'Reilly Hyland Tierney & Associates, Black & White Engineering, Catalyst, Jensen Hughes, and PUNCH Consulting Engineers. Together, we shared a common goal: to create a world-class environment that supports both patients and the clinical teams who care for them.

We are honoured to have contributed to a facility that will make such a meaningful difference in the lives of people living with Cystic Fibrosis in Ireland.

Thanks to Elliott Group for arranging a recent site visit - attended by STW’s Kevin Bates, Paul Connolly, Karl Burton, Mark Crilly, and Raffaella Roncoroni - and production of the below video. It demonstrates the collaboration and teamwork which was essential to the successful delivery of the project on programme and the impact this building will have on patients with CF and their families in the years to come.

Scott Tallon Walker Architects extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Michael Warren, one of Ireland’s foremost modern sculptors and friend of the practice, on the news of his recent passing.

Michael’s collaborations with the practice spanned over four decades, including work featured in a wide range of our buildings and spaces, as well as collaborative architectural projects, such as the acclaimed Tulach a'tSolais Memorial in Co. Wexford. His work achieved international recognition, with pieces on display around Europe and, notably, at Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Farnsworth House, in Illinois.

We look forward to sharing more from our archive in the coming weeks as we reflect on this unique collaborative relationship.

Practice Background

The origins of Scott Tallon Walker date back to 1928 when Michael Scott founded the original architectural practice with Norman D Good. During this period the firm developed a sterling reputation for its excellent design approach to healthcare, major projects at the time included Tullamore Hospital and St. Ultan’s Hospital. The Pavilion Building (1939) was also designed by the firm during this period for the World's Fair in New York. PD.

The Early Years

The Second World War and its aftermath heralded a new period for design in Ireland and under Michael Scott’s mentorship the firm went on to produce some of the finest examples of modern architecture in Europe. Commissions included such landmark buildings as Geragh (1939), Michael Scott’s home in Sandycove, and Córas Iompair Éireann’s Headquarters Building, Busáras (1953) in Dublin. These buildings have been lauded as some of the finest examples of the modernist aesthetic in international architecture to this day, and both Busáras and Geragh have gone on to be listed as protected structures in Ireland.
