HYA were engaged by the OPW for a recent major refurbishment project at Carrowmore Visitor Centre. Through the addition of a modern new entrance porch and significant internal reconfigurations, visitors are now welcomed into a bright new reception area, directly from the carpark, via a new universally accessible route. This new entrance now leads onto the new interactive exhibition space, highlighting the rich culture and history of the site and designed to provide visitors with an experience to enhance their enjoyment of Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, the oldest and densest concentration of Neolithic tombs in Ireland. To the rear of the Centre a new glazed canopy has been provided, to give shelter whilst the guides start the visitor experience outside. Upgrade works were also undertaken to reconfigure accommodation for the centre's staff and to provide new accessible toilet and baby change facilities, helping to further increase inclusivity throughout the site. The project also included works to improve the energy efficiency and carbon emissions of the building.
The building now better represents the quality and importance of The Passage Tomb Landscape of County Sligo, which has been placed on Ireland's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.
