Plants to Save Your Life
seems like the best week of the year to kick this off.
Apparently this is the hardest week of the whole year and this Friday, the 3rd Friday in January is the day when most people present at their GP for a little medical pick-me-up. Something to do with it being the Friday furthest away from pay day in the whole year.
Seems to me a good time to remind you of the plants that are blooming only now in January that can pick-you-up or save your life.
Plant some Hellebores close to your front door and their beautiful flowers will lift your heart every time you go by. Or plant them at a height in a window box so you can see them from inside - you'll see the flowers more easily.
The trick to Hellebores is to cut back their old leathery strappy leaves now to reveal the gorgeous new budding flowers.
Lots of colours too - whites, almost black, purples, pinks and then the ones that have mixed to produce speckled bits.

Another plant to save your life will be coming at you tomorrow.

Plants to Save Your Life.
Mahonia.
Smells gorgeous. Looks beautiful with its yellow blooms. Best in January. Prickly leaves but glossy and rich looking. It's a great shrub to plant if you want to hide bins or an electrical box. Good to have it close to your front door so you can get that scent as you walk by. Looking after it is easy too - it responds well to being pruned or chased up and its bark is pretty attractive too when it's revealed. I like it so much I made it this week's Profile picture.
