van Dijk Architects, in partnership with Conroy Crowe Kelly Architects, on behalf of the Land Development Agency, are delighted to have secured planning permission, for a proposed mixed-use development located at Cherry Orchard, Dublin.
This exciting proposal, consisting of over 700 new homes, a supermarket, community, arts & cultural spaces, will utilise quality public transport, such as the planned DART+ upgrade, and Bus Connects project. It aims to create a vibrant and sustainable new urban neighbourhood. “van Dijk Architects’ design of the new extension to St Nicholas’ National School in Dundalk, Co. Louth, represents a compelling integration of contemporary architectural principles with the functional requirements of educational spaces. Situated within the heart of Dundalk, this project not only serves as a place of learning but also stands as a testament to thoughtful design that harmonises with its urban context while fostering a conductive environment for students and educators” writes Áine Nic an Ríogh in the latest edition of Architecture Ireland. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Delighted to share a significant milestone – we've secured official approval from An Bord Pleanála for our upcoming project. Our envisioned mixed-use scheme in Drogheda embodies a commitment to cultivating a cohesive community.

At its core, our project strives to offer a diverse range of residential options, catering to varying preferences including independent, assisted, and medical support living units. The development encompasses a thoughtfully designed assortment of unit sizes, from elegant two-bedroom maisonettes to refined one and two-bedroom units within the multi-storey blocks, in alignment with the evolving demands of modern living.

Moreover, the development's open space is meticulously curated to incorporate a central green expanse, a vibrant play area, and an invigorating fitness trail.

Beyond the realm of residential offerings, our development holds a broader vision of community enhancement. A strategically curated array of amenities such as a café/bakery, pharmacy, and healthcare center, aim to contribute to the holistic well-being of our future inhabitants.

Residents have settled in to their new homes following the handover of Phase 1 and 2 of this Clúid social housing scheme developed in partnership with Louth County Council. The scheme is being built in three phases by Sonas and OHMG Construction, and when complete will provide homes for 133 families in Dundalk.
Achieving high quality design for social housing is an imperative for encouraging social inclusion. A core policy of our award-winning practice is for our social housing to be visually indistinguishable from quality private sector residential development. The high quality materials and considered brick detailing used throughout Dúiche Roden works well to elevate the look and feel of this scheme.
Phase 1 is comprised of a mix of 47 two-, three- and four-bed houses and bungalows. Phase 2 is the age-friendly element of the scheme, an apartment block composed of five floors and 14 one- and two-bed apartments, which will be managed by Clann, Clúid’s dedicated age-friendly housing service. All apartments are designed using the principles of Universal Design to deliver homes that meet the needs of residents now and also have the flexibility to meet their changing needs in to the future.

Phase 1 of Ballyogan Court is now complete. The project involved the rapid delivery and construction of 67 No. social residential units for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. This impressive development includes top quality landscaping, high spec finishes, generous defensible space provision and permeable pedestrian routes to the nearby Luas.

Sustainable design was the core focus for this project which has uniquely applied Passivhaus Standards in a social housing development in Ireland. Passive Houses require very little energy to achieve a comfortable temperature year-round.

Key criteria incorporated in the project include reduction of space heating and cooling demand, as well as primary energy demand. Energy and environmental monitoring has also be integrated into the design.

Air tightness was greatly increased in this project to 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 pascals, one of very few projects in Ireland to have successfully achieved this standard in social housing.

At a time of soaring energy prices, Passive Houses are circa 62% more efficient than may other residential units being constructed today.

Last night’s Wood Awards 2022 saw the Treetop Walk at Avondale Forest Park winning the overall Wood Award and Innovation Award, with VDA winning Large Scale Public Building for ‘Beyond The Trees’.

Avondale House in Co. Wicklow last year opened ‘Beyond the Trees’, an entirely new visitor experience within it’s grounds, featuring the longest tree top walk in Ireland and a climbing town with a 90m slide. van Dijk Architects worked with our client, Coillte, to design the orientation space, café, shop, exhibition space and a pavilion which tells the story of Coillte’s work in innovative forestry and climate action.

Wood Awards Ireland (WAI) is organised by Forest Industries Ireland (FII) the forestry group in Ibec in partnership with the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland and Enterprise Ireland, with support from the Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. It promotes wood as a sustainable material in innovative projects in Ireland and overseas.
