Boiler service time...! Had a call about a boiler's first start up of the year going badly... emitting lots of smoke... Simple fix, after non use, the hydraulically operated flap on the RHS of the riello burner had seized.. ie, fuel and no air... Then we were asked to do a much overdue service and pics are attached... It's a 1985 burner and old firebird popular boiler but after cleaning, adjustment, change of nozzle and corroded fuel line we got a 91% efficiency reading from the gas analyser. Not bad, seeing as the latest condensing boilers do 97% efficiency at best...
Don't jump to a change of boiler, make sure what you have is working at it's best and insulation is key. Once the heat is in the house, keep it in..
First pictures show inside combustion chamber... Door gasket perished and collapsed, losing heat. 2 mm of soot build up is like 25mm of insulation so it takes longer for heat to get to the water inside the jacket... If you do nothing else, take it apart and scrape off the grunge..
Next picture is inside the sedimenter... I actually had cleaned some of this out before I remembered to take a picture..
The crud will reduce the life of the burner oil pump... at that stage, if the burner is older than 10 years you'd be as well change it at a cost of €300+... an oil pump alone is now circa €100.. So, simply switch off the oil supply, unscrew the bottom of the sedimenter/filter and clean it out.
Also, look for a filter/sedimenter mounted sideways in the fuel line.. This is next to useless as the water and debris needs to settle at the bottom.. yes, we often see this... If you need any advice feel free to give us a call...
