DOWNSIZING? This is a hot topic at the minute, not because we are all trying to downsize on our calories in January, but because many people are finding that their houses are too big! Lockdown and WFH has indeed highlighted the shortcomings in some homes. But for older people, whose families have fled the nest (and are not returning to WFH) many homes are just no longer suitable for their needs. Too big, expensive to run, large gardens, accessibility issues, remote locations, there are many reasons people want to downsize. So a diet might downsize our waist size, but it’s hard to shrink a house. Some people move, others build a new home, or even divide the house in two and share with family. This home was designed for a client in her later years, she was in the fortunate position of being able to build near her daughter. The house was designed around her needs, totally accessible, spacious but only two bedrooms. Easy to manage and economical to run. It has given her a new lease on life. We are so grateful to have worked with this client and learned a lot from her. had a lot to do with the success of this project also.

Spring is in the air today, just as it was 25 years ago when we designed this home. Reminiscent of an Irish Tower House as an object, tall and strong, in the landscape. Spring will come again and again for sure.
