Today 31st January is St Bridget’s Eve. It was tradition to cut the rushes before nightfall and then they were brought in after sunset on St Bridget’s eve. When the crosses were made, any leftover rushes were to be left and taken out in the morning.
There are very many cross designs. The crosses from the year before were then taken down and replaced with the new ones. Crosses were put up over doors of inside the house, others were put up in the byre and any other sheds and outbuildings you might have. Brúitín’ or poundies was eaten during the cross making - it is potatoes "pounded" or mashed with butter, milk, salt and pepper with onions.
