Mulching works .... thick straw mulch around courgettes and sweet corn from when they were transplanted as seedlings. Watered sweetcorn once with few watercans of grey water from the sink. Courgettes not watered at all but still producing lots ... too many!

My husband has been clearing a half acre of spruce that was ugly and growing up in front of our view for the path few years. First picture shows the barren understorey under the spruce. Alders planted as a windbreak from the sea are now well established. So this spring 100 Hawthorn, Rowan, Swedish Whitebeam, Wild Pear and a mixed shrubby willows went in. Focus is to create a great bird habitat with small trees. Loads of bluebells and foxglove are now showing in the areas cleared last year. last pictures are what we are aiming for.

A long time in the planning and build my patio of valentia slate and a clover lawn (also full of nice daisies, wild cranesbill; and not so wanted grass, purslane, docks). Surrounded by Pictorialmeadows classic flower mix. Poppies catch the evening sun and even give a splash of colour on a seriously wet morning. By the way - Valentia slate looks its best in the rain - so a great choice for an Irish garden.

Foxgloves are looking great in the roadside verges at the moment - on the coast road near me I was very surprised to see a white one. You get a huge flush of foxgloves after the ground has been disturbed like this group in Derreen gardens where some trees had been cleared. The seeds apparently last for hundreds of years in the ground and then germinate when they get the chance.

The tulips were flowering on St Patricks Day and the Poached Egg plants are only flowering now. The best laid plans of gardening foiled by one being early and one being late! Next year I'll go for a later variety of tulip. But the bees love the Poached eggs (Limnanthes douglasii)

The swallows arrived here in Lauragh a couple of days ago... spring is in full swing. Forget-me-nots self-seeded in a garden path; Kale in vivid yellow flower - feeding the bees now after a winter feeding us; primroses on the path to the back door; blackthorn & Clematis montana on the way to the woodshed; and a pot of delicate yellow daffodils by the front door
