Here is more of our design for Teach Pobail Mhuire, Doirí Beaga. We looked to the great Liam McCormick for inspiration and prepared comparisons for scale and capacity. McCormick's Donegal churches are some of Europe's best mid C20th churches right on our doorstep. While looking for inspiration from McCormick for our own design we also looked at McCormick's inspiration, Corbusier's Ronchamnp. The church that sadly burned was a much loved and well designed by Patrick Carr Architect from the 1970s. Its shape derived from the platonic like form or the nearby Errigal Mountain. Our design incorporates a cloister for parishioners to meet before and after mass. McCormick also provided these spaces outside his entrances, a paved circle outside the main entrance at Burt, while at Creeslough this space is an elevated terrace with the bell tower acting as a modern obelisk leading to the entrance.

Reflecting on the changes remote working has had on the collaborative act of designing, here are two examples.

Photo 1 shows physical models we made during the design development of Oisrí, now completed, https://macgabhannarchitects.ie/oisri/. These models were made in the office and handled and worked on by several people while developing the design.

Photo 2 shows design development for a house we are currently working on, specifically the roof form. Here the models are computer generated 3D design development models because we are not working together in the office and can only share ideas and develop project in the virtual meeting world.

We won’t know the extent or implication of this until the projects we are currently designing get built. No doubt, more on this to follow!

Stills from recent drone footage of our old friend, the RCC (Regional Cultural Centre) in Letterkenny, which provides as far as restrictions allow, a full busy programme and public engagement during the pandemic, excellently managed and run by Jeremy and his team. The buildings form, projections and roof were driven by the difficult site conditions and topography. The cantilevered first floor gallery space is an urban gesture designed to give the building a visual presence from the Port Road street.

New house going to site in January, in Drumnacraig. Design was developed as an extension to an old traditional cottage with tin roof, which we have developed and extended towards the sea and sky.
