Ireland loves its tar and chip driveways and there are plenty of reasons for this.

Firstly, they are easy to maintain and can withstand even the worst of Irish weather. Secondly, they look beautiful.

The uninformed amongst you may be asking, ‘what is a tar and chip driveway?’.

They are exactly what they sound like… well, almost.

Tar and chip driveways are made from both Industrial tar (or sometimes liquid asphalt) and stone chips.

These chips are compressed into the top level of the tar (or tar substitute) and dry to give a beautiful, classy finish to your driveway.

Advantages of Tar & Chip Driveways
One of the key advantages of tar and chip driveways is that they give you the option to spruce up your driveway in a way that suits you. That is mainly because the chips come in a range of colours.

Thus, the front of your property can fit in, or even compliment, the style of your home. The most popular chip colours are black, brown, grey and red.

As previously said, this type of driveway is easy to look after. With them, you don’t need to have to replace missing stones and there is little chance of the weather creating havoc in the front of your home.

It should also be noted that tar and chip driveways aren’t as expensive as some of the alternatives. For instance, concrete, asphalt, and pavers can all cost a great deal more.

How much does a tar and chip driveway cost?
The answer to the above really depends. Obviously, there are a number of factors at play when determining the cost of any driveway installation.

These include:

The size of the driveway.
The type of chips being used (for instance, different colour chips can be less common, so more costly).
Of course, you are still probably looking for an approximate figure. Roughly speaking, the average cost for a tar and chip driveway at the moment is about €25 per square meter.

However, this can vary greatly.

TAR AND CHIP DRIVEWAYS
Just a few jobs we finished within the last couple of days in CO CORK AND CO KERRY , we used industrial grade hot tar and chips .

Tar and chip can be used on any type of driveway including larger driveway areas, car parks, private roadways and laneways.

We use our own machinery to lay down the hot tar and chip which ensures no delay or reliance on any 3rd party contractor.

Hot tar and chip is applied by spraying down a minimum of 2 layers of hot tar which is covered over by a chipping finish which is rolled into the hot bitumen.

LAYING TAR AND CHIP

The process is quite simple but it does require the correct machinery and experience at laying it otherwise, it can easily unravel at an early stage.

We firstly on base foundation installations will always grade off the driveway using our digger, this ensures a solid and level finish for the new application. We also ensure there are no weak spots or potholes.

If its on top of an existing surface, we will always clean that surface off ensuring no debris or w**ds are left on on it. This ensures a good bonding between the old and the new.

We will then apply a hot bitumen to the surface. Sometimes depending on the area, we might apply two coats or even three coats. This will depend on the type of surface and what we feel will give the best performance. This is done in consultation with our engineers.

A chip of your choosing will then be applied over the hot tar. This needs to be done whilst the bitumen is still piping hot to ensure it bonds in with the chip.

Once we have applied a couple of layers of chip which again depends on how much tar was applied, we will machine power roll the chip into the driveway.

At this stage, the new driveway is good to be used, however, you might still have some loose chips which will fade off over time leaving you with a nice solid new driveway.
