Today, 24 August, something remarkable happens at a 5,800-year-old stone in western Ireland.

The Boheh Stone in County Mayo is one of Ireland’s finest examples of prehistoric rock art. Dating to around 3800 BC, its surface contains more than 250 carvings — cup marks, rings and distinctive keyhole-shaped motifs.

But its location may be just as significant as its carvings.
Viewed from Boheh around 24 August, the setting sun appears to touch the summit of Croagh Patrick before seemingly rolling down the northern slope of the mountain.

The phenomenon occurs again around 18 April — dates traditionally associated with important points in the agricultural year: sowing and harvest.

Whether its prehistoric makers deliberately chose the site for this alignment cannot be proven with certainty. But nearly six thousand years later, the relationship between stone, landscape and sun is still visible.

And tonight is one of the nights to see it.

🦠 MEET BACILLUS SUBTILIS
What you’re looking at is Bacillus subtilis at the microscopic scale — a remarkably well-studied bacterium commonly found in soil and associated with plant roots.

Despite its microscopic size, B. subtilis has some impressive abilities.

It can form highly resistant spores that allow it to survive challenging environmental conditions, and certain strains are known for interacting beneficially with plants and other microorganisms in the rhizosphere.

🌱 Why is Bacillus subtilis so interesting?
• It is naturally associated with soil and plant environments.
• It can colonise plant-root surfaces.
• Certain strains can produce compounds that influence interactions with other soil microorganisms.
• Its ability to form endospores gives it exceptional environmental resilience.
• Because of these characteristics, Bacillus species are extensively studied for their potential applications in agriculture, biotechnology and biological soil management.

Microorganisms like these represent something much bigger than what we can see under a microscope: the extraordinary biological complexity beneath our feet.

🌘🇮🇪 LOOK UP, IRELAND! SOMETHING SPECTACULAR IS HAPPENING THIS WEDNESDAY! ☀️✨

On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, Ireland will experience an incredible partial solar eclipse, with the Moon passing in front of the Sun and dramatically transforming the evening sky. 🌙☀️

Across Ireland, the eclipse will begin at approximately 6:10 PM, reaching its maximum shortly after 7 PM before ending just after 8 PM.

📍 In Dublin: 🌘 Eclipse begins: 6:12 PM 🌘 Maximum eclipse: 7:10 PM 🌘 Eclipse ends: 8:05 PM

And this isn't going to be just a tiny bite out of the Sun. Ireland will experience a very deep partial eclipse, with around 90% or more of the Sun obscured across the country and some locations in the southwest approaching an incredible 97%. 🤯

Ireland won't experience totality, but if the weather cooperates, the Sun will be reduced to a dramatic glowing crescent — definitely worth stepping outside for!

✨ AND THERE'S MORE...

The Perseid meteor shower also reaches its annual peak around 12–13 August, meaning Wednesday could turn into one seriously spectacular night for Irish sky-watchers. ☄️🌌

⚠️ PLEASE WATCH SAFELY

Never look directly at the Sun during a partial solar eclipse — even when most of it is covered.

🕶️ Ordinary sunglasses are NOT safe. 👓 Use proper eclipse glasses that comply with ISO 12312-2. 📱 Don't point binoculars, telescopes or cameras at the Sun without the correct solar filter.
