Cement vs lime mortar — what’s the difference?
One of the biggest mistakes made in older stone buildings is using modern cement mortar where traditional lime mortar should be used.
Cement mortar is hard, dense and less flexible. While it works well in many modern builds, it can trap moisture in older stone walls, leading to cracking, damp problems and long-term damage over time.
Lime mortar works differently. It’s softer and breathable, allowing moisture to escape naturally from traditional stone buildings. This flexibility helps older structures move and settle without damaging the surrounding stone.
That’s why lime mortar has been used in Irish stonework for generations, especially in cottages, churches, farmhouses and heritage buildings.
Using the correct mortar isn’t just about appearance. It plays a major role in protecting the lifespan and integrity of the stonework itself.
