Elon Musk has ignited a new privacy debate by publicly declaring that "WhatsApp is not secure" and labeling the encrypted app Signal as "questionable". His comments, posted on X (formerly Twitter), came in response to a new class-action lawsuit filed against Meta, which alleges that the company can access private messages despite its "end-to-end encryption" claims.
While Musk urged users to switch to "X Chat" as a safer alternative, his attack on Signal—widely regarded by security experts as the "gold standard" for privacy—has drawn particular scrutiny. WhatsApp head Will Cathcart immediately fired back, dismissing the lawsuit as "frivolous" and scientifically impossible, stating that Meta cannot read messages because they do not possess the encryption keys.
Meanwhile, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov joined the fray, agreeing with Musk and stating that trusting WhatsApp in 2026 is "braindead".
