Most people think energy performance starts with insulation, glazing, or HVAC systems.

But one of the biggest factors happens much earlier 👉 How the building is positioned on site.

Building orientation can influence energy use by up to 30% or more, depending on design, glazing strategy, and local climate.

This week marked a major milestone for Ireland’s South East as the sod was officially turned on the €30 million redevelopment of Waterford Airport 👏

Well done and congratulations to all involved in getting to this project up and running. This has been long awaited and will be a vital piece of infrastructure for the South East, enhancing connectivity, supporting regional growth, and creating over 100 construction jobs.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:

• Runway extension to 2,200m to support larger commercial aircraft
• Full terminal and infrastructure upgrades
• Expanded parking and aviation facilities
• Target of 400,000 passengers annually by 2029

As a Waterford based company, we are very proud to play a part in this project and are excited by the potential this redevelopment brings.

At Fewer Harrington & Partners, we are very proud to play a part in this project and are excited by the potential this redevelopment brings. We would also like to commend the incredible work of William Bolster in bringing the project to this stage, and we wish everyone involved in the next phase of construction the very best 🤝

After a decade without regular commercial services, this marks the beginning of a new chapter, with flights potentially returning from Summer 2027.

➡️ Maximising the potential of your façade to improve commercial building performance, linked with intelligent systems, is becoming a defining shift in how we design and operate buildings across Europe.

By integrating smart façades with adaptive shading, responsive HVAC control, and live energy monitoring, commercial buildings can reduce energy demand by up to 25% while improving overall operational efficiency.

With experience across NZEB, LEED, and EU Taxonomy frameworks, we design from the outset to align performance, compliance, and long-term sustainability, delivering lower-carbon, future-ready commercial spaces ✅

From an architectural perspective, industrial and commercial developments offer real opportunities to support biodiversity through modest, well-considered interventions that don’t compromise operational performance ✅

We consider how small, integrated design moves can introduce ecological value into highly functional sites. This can include native meadow planting in residual spaces, hedgerows as boundary treatments, biodiverse swales, or permeable green corridors that support habitat connectivity and pollinators.

➡️ These interventions don’t rely on large-scale change, but on careful coordination and detailing. The result is a development that performs efficiently while also making space for biodiversity to coexist within it.

Design in this context is about integration rather than addition, allowing function and ecology to work together in a considered way 🌱

Fewer Harrington & Partners would like to extend a huge congratulations to Waterpark Rfc underage teams on what can only be described as a tremendous season 🤝

The season has finished on a high, with a great deal of silverware secured in the closing weeks.

A special mention goes to the Waterpark U18.5 Boys and U16 squads, both of whom completed the East Munster double, winning both the League and the East Munster Cup 👏 The U18.5 Boys also enjoyed an excellent campaign in the Pan Munster competition, reaching the final where they were narrowly defeated after a strong run throughout the tournament.

At U16 level, Waterpark (Black) reached the Pan Munster semi-final stage, while also enjoying a highly successful domestic season, well done to all 👏

We would also like to highlight and say well done to the Waterpark Red U15 group, playing a year up in the U16 League and Cup, who also had a strong season and gained valuable experience competing at this level.

A further standout achievement came from the U14 Boys, who reached the East Munster League Final after an excellent campaign, and who are proudly coached by our own COO Neil O’Rourke 👏

Impressive continued growth and progress within the girls’ teams. It’s fantastic to see the U16 girls combining with Dungarvan, a great example of how collaboration is helping to build strength and depth in the game. This kind of development creates real opportunities, with players like Brianna Heylmann having started her journey at U16 level with Waterpark before progressing to represent Munster.

The girls division has also seen several players earn representative honours this year at both Munster and Ireland level - a brilliant achievement for all involved 👏

Well done to all involved 👏 players, coaches, organisers, parents, and supporters. It is fantastic to see the club continuing to grow from strength to strength, with so many young players developing into valued members of the club.

We are very proud to sponsor the Waterpark RFC Youths division and to be part of such an incredible club with a strong sense of community 🏉

From design to delivery, every project is shaped long before the first block is laid and continues to evolve long after completion.

As architects, it is especially rewarding to see our work realised in built form, particularly on a project as significant as the transformation of the former Waterford Crystal site intoBuilding 1 - Glassworks

🏢 Building 1 delivers 80,000 sq ft of Grade A office space for modern, sustainable working. The four-storey flagship includes:

+ Large, light-filled floor plates
+ On-site amenities: parking, EV charging & end-of-trip facilities
+ A landscaped public realm

This €43m building marks the first milestone in a 37-acre enterprise and innovation campus, located beside South East Technological University (SETU)

Designed and developed to achieve optimal sustainability, using modern building techniques in line with LEED accreditation.

➡️ A defining feature of the project is the sensitive integration of the former Waterford Crystal showroom, retaining a key element of the site’s industrial heritage while establishing a contemporary, high-performance workspace for future-focused occupiers.

We extend our congratulations to Frisby and the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) on the successful delivery of this landmark project.

Designing places that support nature, people and performance 🌱 Biodiversity is an integral design layer, that we embed across landscape, water systems, and built form.

From wildflower meadow planting and native hedgerows, to biodiverse drainage systems, green roofs, and connected ecological corridors, these interventions support pollinators while enhancing the overall quality and experience of place.

This approach ensures that even highly functional or dense developments can contribute to wider ecological networks, supporting habitat creation and long-term landscape performance ✅

With 8,408 new homes commenced in Q1 🏗️ up 184% year-on-year and a particularly strong March, the scale of acceleration is clear. These figures point to a system that is beginning to respond more effectively to demand.

However, while this progress is encouraging, there is still more to be done to meet long-term housing needs. Sustained delivery, planning efficiency, and infrastructure investment will all remain critical in the months and years ahead.

Maintaining this momentum will be key as the industry focuses on turning commencements into completed homes at scale.

Ireland’s housing model is evolving, but the real challenge is no longer just supply, it’s form.

➡️ The key question for our cities is how we design urban density that is viable, liveable, and contextually appropriate, what “good density” actually looks like in an Irish context, and why design decisions at building and block scale are central to getting it right.

Ireland’s housing model and urban density are reshaping how cities are designed. This article explores how architectural design and typology influence successful urban development in Ireland.
