The Minister of State for Planning, John Cummins TD today welcomed the approval to use the Repair and Leasing Scheme (RLS) to renovate St John’s Presbytery, a large vacant property in Waterford city centre and convert it into a centre for homeless women in a new pilot project expanding the RLS model to provide such accommodation.

The building will include nine apartments, six emergency units and a meeting room to provide support services to the residents. The Tintean Housing Association will provide accommodation and services to up to 15 women experiencing homelessness in the renovated building. Work will commence shortly, and the building is expected to be available for occupation by April 2026.

MDP Architects are delighted to be associated with Savvi Credit Union and Retail space situated in Sir John Rogerson Quay. We provided architecture & design services as part of Design & Build team. A Dynamic workplace capable of accommodating a larger team of users and multiple, concurrent activities was a key driver in the design and these headquarters feature space for team collaboration, social interaction, a team hub and more.
The clients and project teams commitment to sustainability was important. The existing architecture and materials were leveraged wherever possible to minimise waste, and a variety of repurposed fixtures inhabit the space.

Manor Hill - Waterford City.
Waterford City and County Council recently granted permission for a substantial programme of refurbishment and construction works in the former St Joseph’s convent buildings on Manor Hill which will deliver 71 residential units in a unique setting. The conservation led approach to the repurposing of the existing structures, in conjunction with significant landscaping and service upgrade works, will deliver one of the largest residential adaptive re-use projects in the southeast. The site, which has been vacant for a number of years, offers huge potential for the revitalisation of an entire city block by opening up pedestrian access across a number of locations on the site on what was formerly a walled off religious community. This ambitious project is being undertaken by Walsh Sheehan Investments Ltd with a specific focus on the delivery of residential accommodation for elder living.
The site and buildings retain an important place in Waterford’s local history and the proposed use of the building will ensure the safeguarding of the building into the future.
The project has been greatly supported by Waterford City and County Council and is an excellent example of using the Repair and Lease scheme to sustainably develop existing vacant buildings into high quality housing.
We would like to thank all of the stakeholders involved for their work on the project to date and we look forward to undertaking construction on site in the near future. Great work by the design team in progressing the project to this point and in particular the team at MDP + Partners Architects including David Merrigan, Matthew Keating and Grainne Daly.
