Robs Veggie Patch

Robs Veggie Patch This page is not a “How to do it gardening page” but rather a “This is how I did it, warts & all”.

My successes will be song from up high…my failures can be laughed at by all.

Its been a rather mixed summer re the weather. Some crops better then others...but the sunflowers, brilliant. Never grown a sunflower this big before and here is the newspaper pic with me up the ladder. Think I will go for the Irish record next summer!

Been busy the last 2-3 weeks picking & poding the peas then into the fridge for the winter. I will leave a few on the plants to fully mature then save the seed to sow again next year.
The sunflowers have gone mad!!! and still growing. Pictures soon once I think they have reached their full height.

Spring has Sprung!! well according to the calendar it has. Still far too cold to plant out most veg but have winter planted onions growing well outside. The rhubarb is up + have planted 4 more plants, we love rhubarb & ginger jam and Moira is a Master Jam Maker. Some of the shallots have been planted outside but most in small pots in the greenhouse beside the garlic. Busy right now sowing both flower and veggie seeds for the electric propagator and the greenhouse and tidying up the indoor strawberries.

ROBS VEGGIE PATCH. It’s been a fruitful summer, good harvest & now time to prepare for 2021 & whatever that brings! Busy this week sorting out the strawberries, first job discard any plants that have not performed well & then re potting some of the runners from their temporary yogurt pots. These will then overwinter in the greenhouse. Now for a big decision to take down the guttering that I grew several plants in this year. Not enough soil & too much sun so that they dried out all too easily. During the winter I will build a stand to take 1 ½ litre pots as this worked well in another part of the Veggie Patch. I will also be putting up more shelving in the greenhouse that will hold approx. 50 plants. Will let you know how it all works out. Take care, Rob

ROBS VEGGIE PATCH. THE NEW MINI VEGGIE GARDEN Thank you to all who have viewed this page over the last year & it will continue, PLUS an addition to the blog. My present Veggie Patch measures 2,000 square feet (I’ll leave that to you to convert to metric) which is larger than what some of my have to cultivate. I am therefore developing another veggie garden of 200 square feet which includes a feature to grow as much as I can along an 8 foot side of a shed. These pics are just the beginning of the project so do please come back & see how it develops plus of course how the main garden is looking. Happy weeding. Rob

ROBS VEGGIE PATCH. We have a new arrival at the Veggie Patch, a MELOLONTHA more commonly known as a Cockchafer or a May-bug. Moira found it munching away on our raspberries & came in very excited. “We’ve got a Colorado Beetle in the garden!!!” So out with our animal & plant book to identify it properly. “No Moira, not a deadly Colorado but a friendly Cockchafer”. It crawled around on my hand & then I relocated it to “Creepy Hollow” where all the other bugs live.
