Spring Sowings! It's coming to that time year again....'Sowing Time!' I'd like a quick word here in relation to sowing...sometimes we get excited and sow everything or a bit of everything around March/April when in fact its much more efficient to spread out our sowing times for better harvests with less damage. These dates are distilled from 36 years trial and error in my gardens, where my results have highlighted best timings for best results. In poorly structured soil, there is little or no pore space and, though there is probably plenty of water, there will be very little air. The result is a heavy, wet, hard and lumpy soil.

With the recent drought SOIL has once again come to light, this is usually a subject we approach in autumn with some trepidation but Richard from GIY gets it in one with his current post:
The first thing to sort out is your soil, maximise its water holding capacity. Contrary to what many beginners think, a soil managed for good drainage is also best for holding water, so it will cope with the flood conditions we had in the spring and the drought conditions of the summer.
So there you have it......mulch, mulch, mulch!!😀
