THE INTERIOR OF THE SYNAGOGUE ARAGON IN KASTORIA
For a long time the interior of the synagogue Aragon in Kastoria (1830-late 1940s/early 1950s) was known to us from a sketch published by the late architect Panos Tsolakis in 1994. According to that sketch the synagogue interior had a raised Bimah over the main entrance and the Ehal on the eastern wall. Then in 1960-61 architect Shemtov Samuel visited Kastoria - among other cities - and apparently met with survivors and members of the Jewish community who described to him their synagogue, which he recorded in a sketch of the floor plan of the synagogue. For a long time that sketch was unclear, but after closer observation its identity was revealed. The sketch is in his archive - which is now part of the E. Messinas Archive - and is supported by a verbal description of the interior of the synagogue where Samuel tells us that "the interior floor was lower from the street" and that "in the center of the synagogue, among the 4 columns, was the Bimah." In addition, to the "exedra or balcony" over the main entrance - recorded by Tsolakis.
The interior of the synagogue was photographed in the film by Sam Elias of 1936, but it was too dark. The space seems to be tight, although the synagogue is large, hinting perhaps to the central Bimah occupying most of the central space.
In addition, for a long time a low quality interior photograph of the synagogue was published showing the wooden ceilings and windows, but only after closer observation recently it was made clear that the picture was printed backwards. Although it seemed like the photographer was looking north, he was actually looking south towards the raised women's gallery - which was rectangular in form, and therefore, like with most first floors in traditional houses in Northern Greece, projected from the ground floor contour which followd the side street.
Based on all these materials and observations, for the first time, we can digitally 'visit' the interior of the synagogue, as close to the original as possible, in the attached video, created by architect Elias Messinas (technically assisted by draftwoman Conny Naim). The revised floor plans of the synagogue will be published later this year. Enjoy this short video that connects us to one more Greek synagogue that once existed but does not exist anymore.

Beth Saul Synagogue (1898-1943) in Thessaloniki designed by architect Vitaliano Poselli, is being brought to life with a digital representation by architect Elias Messinas (01/26). It is expected to be presented at an exhibition on the synagogues of Greece in New York in the summer. Stay tuned for more details.
