It was a pleasure to join Raphael de la Fontaine representing De La Fontaine Architecture at the CVU 2026 Europe Conference in Madrid, presenting Midtown Jerusalem and House of America as part of the session “Interacting with the Pre-Existing,” while also participating as part of the CVU EU Steering Committee.

A great opportunity to exchange ideas and perspectives with architects, engineers, developers, and urban thinkers on how our cities can continue to evolve while maintaining identity, density, and human experience at their core.

Thank you to the Council on Vertical Urbanism for organizing such an inspiring event.

House of America explores how architecture can evolve without erasing itself. Instead of preserving the existing tower as an isolated artifact or replacing it entirely, a new structure grows around it, allowing the building to expand, perform, and adapt while retaining the very thing that made it part of the city in the first place.

Not preservation as nostalgia.
Transformation as continuity.

Jerusalem is not a vertical city.
Its density comes from proximity. Low, close, immediate. So What does it mean to introduce skyscrapers into Jerusalem?
Midtown Jerusalem approaches this question directly. Rather than forcing towers to “fit,” the project establishes a new ground beneath them.

Not a replica of the historic fabric.
Not a generic podium.
A more compressed and connected urban layer.
In the historic city, intimacy was never designed. It emerged over time. Here, it is constructed.

This shift is also material. Jerusalem stone moves from mass to system. Thinner, lighter, assembled. Precision and control are gained. Depth and weight are reduced.

The project operates within that contradiction rather than resolving it.

Raphael de la Fontaine will present on Midtown Jerusalem at the CVU Europe Conference in Madrid this Thursday.

Raphael de la Fontaine has recently joined as the EU Steering Committee for the Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU) and will be attending the CVU Europe Conference in Madrid.

Through his work at De La Fontaine Architecture, Raphael has been exploring how high-density development can evolve into integrated urban systems, where architecture brings together infrastructure, landscape, and public life into cohesive environments.

He is particularly interested in how vertical urbanism can move beyond efficiency to create meaningful, human-centered experiences, balancing innovation with context and long-term urban value.
Raphael will be presenting between 12:00 and 13:10 in a session titled “Integrating Time, Reviving History Through Innovation.”

Looking forward to exchanging perspectives with others working across architecture, engineering, and development.

If you’re attending CVU Europe, feel free to reach out , it would be great to connect.

We’re pleased to share that Raphael de la Fontaine, founder of De La Fontaine Architecture, will be speaking at the on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Europe Conference in Madrid (6–7 May).

Bringing together leading architecture firms, developers, and industry experts, the conference explores the future of high-density urban environments.

In his session, Raphael will present Midtown and Beit America, exploring how renovation and innovation can work together to transform existing buildings while preserving their unique identity. The talk will highlight how architecture adapts to context and integrates new technologies to bridge the gap between past and future.

Looking forward to a great conversation in Madrid!

Ray Eames once said: "What works good is better than what looks good, because what works good lasts."

This International Women’s Day, we are proud that over 60% of our team is comprised of talented women who ensure our projects don't just "look good" on day one, but "work good" for decades to come.

They are the structural thinkers, the creative problem-solvers, and the visionaries behind many of the spaces we design.

On the EVE project, Raphael de la Fontaine shared his vision:
“Our fluid buildings become frames, quietly supporting the real stories of people, landscape, and community as they come to life.”

Frank Gehry has left us 💔. With his passing our field loses an architect who expanded the limits of form, of material and of imagination itself. Few figures have shifted the trajectory of architecture so completely.

As my own personal tribute, I thought to share my experience with this amazing mentor. In his own unique way, Frank’s influence as a teacher was less about his instruction or critique of my work, and much more about his sheer presence. Studying under him at Yale carried a sense of constant discovery, almost like an adventure. He never guided you to answers, instead, he challenged the questions themselves. And in that challenge he made me pursue a voice that was truly original. Not surprisingly, architectural style was completely irrelevant, even though we all fantasized about creating dancing buildings of our own. To him, a postmodernist, a minimalist or a classical facade could be most adequate if that was indeed your architectural vocabulary.

Thank you, Frank, for the gift of that pursuit: the courage to seek my own voice, just as you so fearlessly sought yours at a time I needed it most.

May you now rest in peace with the great masters of history. Thank you for leaving lights along the path you asked us to forge alone.
