jmadc - lowercasevowels jmadc - lowercasevowels is a platform to share the processes governing the architecture that emerges as a 'product' in JMA Design Collaborative.

In most of the architectural discussions architecture is referred to (or implied) with a capital 'A'. What does not come across are the processes that go behind the making of it, making sense of each decision that 'builds' it. What lies hidden are the silent vowels and the lower case consonants. At jmadc we believe that all built environment should not only be sensitive to the site, context and pr

ogram, but the means and processes of arriving at an appropriate architecture are the key to this sensitivity. Through this platform, we intend to share the processes exploring various aspects of design, construction, materials, details, people, trades that help us achieve the quality of built environment we strive for. We look forward to sharing our explorations and lessons with the intention of generating a feedback.

Why not reuse?

Project: KKV Hall, Rajkot.
The project brief was to demolish an existing‘marriage hall’ and construct a new office building. Looking at the quality of existing structure, it was possible to convert the same into an office building with certain infrastructural additions and retrofitting. However We carried out an extensive Cost Benefit Analysis of all possible scenarios so as to help the client to arrive at an informed decision. The scenarios considered the qualitative as well as quantitative aspects. With due consideration, it was decided to retain the existing structure and adapt it for the new program with all necessary state-of-the-art infrastructure. The design process considered and mitigated the disadvantage of high floor heights and resultant high operational energy costs by integrating a climate responsive envelope on the west and south facades.

Throwback Series: Chinmaya Mission Paramdham.

For the slabs of the classroom block at Paramdham Campus, we decided to opt for the filler slab technology. With each classroom slab having an area of 60 sq.m, it was just about possible to go for the filler slab. We replaced the structurally redundant concrete component of the slab with bricks made using the debris of the buildings demolished at the site. The process required meticulous planning, detailing, sampling as well as ex*****on.
By adopting this filler slab technology, we were able to replace about 18% of the concrete with brick fillers. Thus the dead load of the slab reduced considerably, concrete worth Rs. 36,000/- replaced by recycled waste bricks costing Rs. 2,500/- for each slab!

Recover and Regenerate: The existing buildings on the campus were dismantled carefully to achieve maximum resource recovery. In order to do this, the team tapped into informal networks of material recovery that existed in the city and made conscious efforts to formalize that as a standard process of architectural practice. While the re-useable materials such as Kota stonebricks, doors & windows were released into informal market of low cost construction for the needy, what was discarded as waste, was recycled on site to make new construction material for the project.

Throwback Series: Chinmaya Mission Paramdham Temple.

Recover & Regenerate: 'Paramdham' is the Ahmedabad center of Chinmaya Mission, a spiritual and cultural organisation. A need for renewal of the campus was felt due to the dilapidated nature of existing buildings and expansion of Mission's activities, while retaining the spirit of the place and its associations. Design at all levels was about understanding the values, physical or spiritual, and reinterpreting them in contemporary contexts with sustainability concerns. Thus, the Spirit of Renewal is the guiding beacon in the quest of the project's Renewal of the Spirit.

Design for Recovery: This approach to design embeds spatial polyvalence and retrievability of components/ materials at the end of life cycle of the project. The Perch house, given its topographical and programmatic context, is designed such that it touches the ground lightly and building, when needed, can be fully dismantled and materials/elements recovered fully, leaving the site almost untouched.

Throwback Series: H24, Aalloa Hills.

Responding to the characteristic features of the site- steep slopes, very little flat land, loose sandy soil and a thriving ecology of dense vegetation and large trees- the
architectural concept, was to create a ‘Perch’, sitting lightly atop the small flat land,
overlooking the valleys.
