The Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings in New Delhi house several key ministries and departments of the central government. Strategically located along the Kartavya Path, they form a vital component of the broader Central Vista Redevelopment Project.

A distinctive architectural feature of the three CCS buildings is their innovative courtyard canopy. This design incorporates twenty-three lenticular trusses spanning 40 metres across the shorter axis, supported by bracing trusses along the longer axis. The canopy consists of 264 perforated aluminium panels, each measuring 3m x 3m. They are designed to create a comfortable microclimate within the courtyard. These panels filter sunlight to produce a dappled effect, enable uninterrupted airflow, and allow rainwater to nourish the space below. Such conditions are ideal for supporting the growth of large trees, offering occupants a shaded, tranquil retreat during Delhi’s intense summer heat.

"In principle, I was unhappy that trees would be cut for the riverfront development plan. But when I visited the pilot stretch, I saw that many trees were being planted. In ancient times, rivers had ghats, and this feels similar. I started visiting the riverside, at least twice a week, only after this project.”

-Koregaon Park resident Preksha Karmarkar, as reported by Hindustan Times on 4th June, 2025.

As various stretches of the Mula-Mutha riverfront development in Pune begin to take shape, residents have started to enthusiastically reclaim their connection to the river. The promenades and trails along the river have become a site for vibrant everyday life, with many commending the clean, shaded walkways lined with lush green canopies. This article by the Hindustan Times serves as a testament to HCP’s long-standing ethos behind riverfront development projects – to employ pragmatic, contextual and functional urban design as a means to create valuable public assets for the city and its residents.

The landscape team at HCP is leading the development of Phase 3 of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development in Ahmedabad. This phase extends the riverfront by 5 km, enhancing urban rejuvenation and environmental improvement.

Image 1: Phase 3 spans a total of 10 km along both the west and east embankments, featuring plazas, a lower promenade, and a 16-meter-wide designed forest zone, integrating nature with urban spaces.

Image 2: Concept sketches depict an organic, dense urban forest area. A modular design adapts and responds to varying contexts ensuring diverse spatial experiences and ease of ex*****on.

Image 3: Four modules with different tree and understory plant ratios are planned, incorporating shade-tolerant species for understory plants. Plans for two modules — the Dense Forest Module and the Sparse Forest Module — are shown here.

Image 4: Detailed isometric views show native species in the Dense Forest Module, promoting ecological richness and aesthetic harmony.

Image 5: The transition depicts a mature, flood-resilient forest area, supporting diverse flora and fauna. This creates a self-sustaining ecosystem, ultimately enhancing the user experience.

Phase 3 riverfront’s landscape design thoughtfully integrates adaptive planting strategies that respond to the site's microclimates, hydrology, and ecological context. This strategy bolsters the embankment's resilience and the area's existing biodiversity.

As part of our series featuring HCP’s early projects, we feature the Carmel Convent Hostel (1977).

This modest hostel was designed for a group of Carmelite Sisters invited to establish a school in the newly planned capital of Gandhinagar. Though simple and economical in its design, particular care was given to the lighting of the chapel, creating a serene and contemplative space.

Originally intended to be constructed in exposed brick and concrete, the building was later finished with plaster and paint, softening its appearance while retaining its essential character.

A primary school for children with special needs, Gautam and Gira Sarabhai’s Balghar was a historic contribution to the canon of 20th-century architecture in Ahmedabad. In 2015, HCP undertook the refurbishment of the building, addressing the need for expansion and improved facilities. The subsequent conservation process involved sensitive interventions that lent continuity with the simplicity of the building’s original design. An interesting element of the building was its central staircase – a fifty-year-old wooden dog-legged assembly featuring an ingenious structural system. The restoration process reinforced the structural integrity of the staircase while maintaining its unique detailing, form, and aesthetic quality.

Image 3: Conservation Process

01- The original wooden staircase was inspired by the staircases in Ahmedabad’s pol houses and had been functional since its construction in 1960.

02- The staircase is supported only at the slab levels by stringer beams, which support the mid-landing.

03- Adjoining walls needed to be pulled down and strengthened during the refurbishment. The staircase had to be carefully protected during this process.

04- Additional bracing was discretely introduced to strengthen the staircase.

Our model-making studio at HCP is an invaluable asset, bringing designs to life beyond digital renderings. As architects and urbanists, we use physical models to explore spatial relationships, test proportions, and refine details with precision. A tangible model helps us assess form, light, and scale intuitively.

With our in-house studio, we can quickly prototype, experiment with materials, and make real-time adjustments, leading to refined, innovative solutions. Our in-house 3D printing facilities empower designers to swiftly transform ideas into precise physical models, streamlining design development and contributing to impactful client presentations. Models also enhance client engagement, clarifying complex ideas for better understanding and decision-making. Ultimately, our model-making studio elevates both design and presentations, making it an essential part of our process.
