Born on June 20th 1930, Prof. Prabhakar B. Bhagwat - India’s first qualified landscape designer - was a practitioner, academician, and researcher. In everything that he did, his intent was to create spaces of conversation, and investigation. On his 95th Birth Anniversary, we remember, and continue to build on this legacy.

We are extremely happy to announce the Foundation’s latest publication - The Planting Heritage; Planting Design Studies; a compendium of essays that investigates topic that was very close to our Founder’s heart - planting design, and plant material. Beyond Design Edition Four continues. This time, four our second session we are joined by Mr. Sudhir Ghodke, an alumnus of VNIT, Nagpur and IIM-Ahmedabad. Having co-founded Educational Initiatives an Ed-tech organisation, and working towards measuring learning outcomes and impact assessment for 15 plus years, he is now seeing analysands (clients), offering a combination of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

When the Foundation began its work in 2007, it started with offering small research grants towards the examination of abstract ideas. Underlying this was a keen sense of investigation, and then developing manners in which to communicate and represent that information. By design, this work was ever directly linked to the work that the design studio was doing; but was just a result of wanting to examine ideas that hadn’t been examined previously, and then drawing parallels and connections with the manners in which we experience, and build the world around us. All of these publications are of course available on our website now. Amidst all the other work that the Foundation does, we felt that it was time to go back to work that has led to everything we do today.

Our work with Ms. Sneha Khulge - an architect and researcher - currently based in the UK is a step in that direction. Over the next few months, she will be documenting and examining the connection between the sea, the coast line, and the city of Mumbai. Stay tuned for more information as this work progresses. A few months ago we embarked on a journey - one whose intent is to decode the Garden Histories of Ahmedabad.

The process began a few months ago instigated by the fact that Ahmedabad - over the centuries - has seen many forms of governance and administration; ranging from the Bhil tribe (when the city wasn’t even Ahmedabad yet) to the Maratha and Mughal periods, to the present times. Each of these periods has brought with it its own understanding of culture, community, and, of course, varying ideas of the Garden form in the city.

We are hoping to eventually present this information as an exhibition and small monograph.

As the research progresses, we are looking to hire graphic designers, and illustrators who can design and execute the graphic language for this effort. Some understanding of spatiality and spatial design, and an interest in understanding and decoding the garden form will be a huge added benefit.

Written in 1953, Andha Yug by Dharamvir Bharati, narrates the events that transpired on the 18th and last day of the Mahabharata.

In November of last year Arpita Dhagat a performance maker and director brought this story to life, with Rubamin Private Limited’s Admin Building at Halol becoming the space that inspired the conceptualisation of the production.

On January 11th, we will hear from Arpita on her process of conceptualising a site-specific performance, and the connections between space and performativity. So, do write in, in case you would like to attend.

We wrapped up edition three of Beyond Design last week with Mr. Arjun Handa last Saturday. It seems like a good time to look back at the many conversations our audiences and we have been able to partake in! We look forward to many such conversations in the future!
