At Design Ni Dukaan, there is a constant attempt to rethink an already perceived notion that permeates everything that design can address. This is applied to all the scales and typologies that the studio works with.

We recently designed and executed our first office project in Gandhidham.

During our initial discussions with the clients, we acknowledged the prevalent trend of viewing office projects as quick fixes, characterised by generic elements such as aluminium sections, commercially sourced modular furniture, exposed piping and so on.

Beyond addressing mere functionality, the brief was to make an attempt to use our knowledge and details to reimagine office spaces.

We posed questions such as : Can we use materiality as a process to find a solution to this project? Can we use this process to create a warm work culture? An atmosphere that induces more productivity? Can art inserts become a seamless part of the volume?”

Basically, rethinking office spaces as a volume for coherent art -
A gradual building of elements, objects and functional sculptures of various scales; parts, eventually coming together to create the “whole”.

And we were glad that the client’s vision was quite alike to ours.

Drop-N-Pleat Table

Our studio lifestyle revolves around a simple routine of
"Eat - rest - think - converse - work - relax - rejuvenate"

As our studio continues to grow, we encountered a challenge in the form of limited space in our dining area. Hence, we decided to design an additional dining table, aiming for a piece that not only conserves space through its foldable nature but also doubles as a sculptural artwork when not in use.

Crafted to accommodate four individuals and configurable in various setups, this table was a product of ingenuity. The table also doubles up as a console.

One of our interns .agrawal led an in-depth pattern exercise resulting in legs that seamlessly integrate into the table when folded.
In consideration of spatial constraints, the table was designed in sleeker sections, ensuring minimal intrusion into our workspace when in use.

This endeavor signifies more than just an additional piece of furniture; it represents an extension of our exploration into the realm of "furniture as functional art."

With the success of this pieces, we aim to build on this further and create functional yet sculptural pieces tailored for smaller living environments.

The Amoeboid Table

For anyone growing up in houses constructed before the 90’s , the nostalgia of terrazzo is potent.
In recent times have seen the re-emergence of terrazzo as a material.
The most interesting aspect about terrazzo is that, by definition it is an amalgamation of varied sizes and shapes of stones embedded in a single layer. When one begins to experiment with these basic elements of the material, the possibilities of engaging and executing with it become endless.

This particular piece was inspired from one of the paintings by Architect Roberto Burle Marx called the “Amoeboid”.

The pattern that we sketched did not have a single perfect curve. The challenge was to translate this into a 7 feet diameter of a dining table top. Each colour of the design was cast as a separate slab. The whole process was like putting together a complex puzzle.

The base followed a similar process. The brass sheets were manually rolled to form the cylinder for the base of the table.

This process has been a fluctuation between whole-to-part and part-to-whole. There was an experimentation with not just the materials, but the techniques as well.

In design, there is increasing subjectivity as more and more complex assemblies come into play. There is hardly ever a textbook answer or a ‘one size fits all’ solution to the problems we tend to come across. But doesn’t this web of permutations and combinations open the door to more and more opportunities?

The Mosaic House, Bombay

Elder Son’s Bedroom

For the elder son’s bedroom, two-rooms were combined to create one space. It became imperative to create a balance between openness and a certain sense of privacy.

This blend was articulated by adding functional sculptures.

Elder Son’s Bedroom

For the elder son’s bedroom, two-rooms were combined to create one space. It became imperative to create a balance between openness and a certain sense of privacy.

This blend was articulated by adding functional sculptures and artworks that act as partitions within the room.

The furniture pieces were designed to be multi-functional. The dressing unit for instance, on one side, is a console with drawers and trays to hold essentials and extra dressing accessories but is also extended in a way that it becomes a partition with a dresser on one side and a bronze mirror on the other.

With an aspiration to create an intersection of art with functionality, the wardrobe shutters were re-imagined as 10ft x 4 ft canvas that could curate fabrics and textiles as art and facia for the wardrobes.

The Mosaic House, Bombay

Parents’ Bedroom

This room was the most concise volume on the floor plan. We wanted all the elements of this room to have a certain lightness in their character.

The parents being old, we tried to create a clutter free room and all the details of the furniture and the functional objects were designed according to their needs.

The small corner holds a dressing with a full-length mirror and incorporated storage spaces adjacent to it.

The reading couch was designed specifically to create a cosy reading nook in the room.
