We didn't build Toybox. We listened to it. A 160-year-old Indo-Portuguese house in Aldona told us what it wanted to be, and we went out of the way to hear it.

What's left is something rare: a home where the old and new don't fight. They dance.

Crescent House, Nandi Hills. Months of collaboration, iterations, and trust now sit quietly in these walls.

At some point, the conversation shifts, from what a space will look like to how it will feel. That is when it becomes real.

Crescent House is almost there. The vault stands, the staircase moves as it was meant to, and light from the circular skylight traces the walls through the day. Even in its unfinished state, the house already feels calm and complete.

Every decision was shaped with a client who gave us what matters most: time and belief.

We are finishing. Not just the building, but the thought.

Rammed earth, layers of soil, compressed by hand and machine into walls, is the material we chose for this project. It is our first completed rammed earth build, and to say we are in love with it is an understatement.

The strata left by the formwork panels are not imperfections. They are the record of how the wall was made. Each horizontal line is a layer rammed into the one below it. The wall is, in a sense, its own construction drawing.

Inside, the rooms are quiet in a way that is hard to explain. The walls hold heat differently. The air feels different. There is a quality to rammed earth interiors that you have to experience, something between solidity and warmth.

The clients are both designers. They understood this material before a single wall was cast. This house was always going to be this.

Nearing completion. Aldona, North Goa.

The bathrooms at Toybox were meticulously crafted with a sense of care, warmth, and attention to detail. Each space is anchored by a skylight that gently brings in natural light, allowing the bathrooms to shift in mood through the day while reducing the need for artificial lighting. The interplay of light and material creates a calm, almost meditative atmosphere.

The washbasins, sourced from an antique store in Kolkata, add a layer of character and history to the space. Their aged textures and unique forms introduce a sense of continuity, grounding the bathrooms in a narrative that feels both personal and timeless. Together, these elements transform the bathrooms from purely functional spaces into intimate, thoughtfully composed experiences.

WOODBINE II
Nandi Hills, Bengaluru

A beautiful home on a beautiful site that is surrounded by hills on three sides. The house has been designed with a low and long front elevation with a brick screen that ties the building to the land and regulates the flow of breeze into the house.

House with Three Pavilions is geographically located along the path of the watershed from surrounding higher elevations that drain into the Arabian Sea. At its center, a natural depression was found with a seasonal wetland hosting diverse flora and fauna. This natural wetland feature was preserved and developed into a waterbody which forms the focal point for the landscape and the layout of the pavilions on the site. The pond collects rainwater runoff from the site and the building roofs and recharges the underground aquifers. Furthermore, it is connected to a newly planned system of bioswales that spread excess runoff water over a larger surface area increasing the rate and extent of percolation. The widespread percolation at the site helps in keeping the soil moist and reduces the amount of water needed for the irrigation of the landscape. Part of the site has been left wild so that our development does not tamper with the existing ecological balance on the site and for habitat restoration.

Built entirely in local laterite stone, the on-site water management system helps offset the load on the rudimentary public storm water systems found in the Goan villages and boosts the severely depleted underground water table. As a result of the ecological planning, the underground water levels have been retained at pre-construction levels, negating the impact of the new construction on the environment. The system prevents additional flooding at the neighboring fields and other low-lying areas in the village. A significant win is the return of biodiversity to the land that existed prior to construction.

Kaavi art is one of Goa’s most distinctive decorative traditions, where white motifs emerge from a deep red ochre surface carved into lime plaster. Found across temples and historic buildings, the craft reflects a rich intersection of architecture, ritual, and material knowledge.

On 6 December, Heritage First Goa hosted a Kaavi art workshop at Morjai Temple, allowing participants to explore the techniques, symbolism, and patience behind this layered craft through hands on practice.

Traditions like Kaavi remind us how deeply art, architecture, and landscape are connected in Goa.

Whenever we go to site with Sarang, he finds any surface, any flat edge, and begins to sketch. His drawings articulate the design and the details, and that is how we communicate and resolve them on site.

Construction is a ritual that teaches patience.
Layer by layer, step by step, material meeting material, hand meeting hand.
Stone, lime, wood, steel, each arriving in its own time, each asking to be understood.
It is a slow collaboration between site, craft, weather and will.
Nothing rushed, nothing forced.
Just steady progress shaped by care, conversation and trust.

Two months into 2026, and we are grateful to be celebrating another milestone. Thank you for honouring us as the Conservation Architecture Winner 2026.

This project may be a small house, but it received no less attention than we would give a palace restoration. Every inch was approached with care. Some interventions are quiet and may not reveal themselves at first glance, yet the resulting spaces speak with clarity and conviction.

Through a rigorous process of documentation, we ensured that no detail was overlooked. The home, over 160 years old and Indo-Portuguese in character, was carefully restored and thoughtfully updated for contemporary living, balancing preservation with present-day needs.

This recognition is not just about an award. It reflects the dedication, discipline, and collaborative spirit of our team. Toybox is not just our design. It stands as proof that collaboration and cooperation will always outweigh competition.

Think abundantly. Serve willingly.
