My perfect FRUITFUL (literally) Sunday morning… before the week starts and I get occupied with architecture again , always attempting to save resources on my site , I Donot want to end up wasting resources and produce in my kitchen which very generously our friends and family have been offering us from their gardens . Fresh seasonal fruits like jackfruit, mangoes, bulls heart and bananas by the dozens! Creativity must flow , be it in the kitchen or on the office desk or on site. I really enjoyed the two combinations… flavor of banana and bulls heart together and also their colors match! I also enjoyed the flavor of jackfruit and mango together and their colors match too!

Today I went to pick up some roof tiles from an old house being demolished in remote interiors of goa and I was asked by the local village lady what I will do with them. They were shocked to hear that I am going to use them to build a new house. “You mean you will live in a house with roof of these tiles?” They told me that These are old and now days you can build concrete slab houses….i felt sad to hear that and told them that The house they build now will not last half the life of the house they demolished. This house I am restoring and making an extension to is by using all old salvaged materials , not only because I believe in reuse and recycle but because EVERY MATERIAL THAT WAS USED TO BUILD IN THE PAST WAS CHOSEN AND HAND PICKED AND THERE WAS NO COMPROMISE IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING IT. Everything I salvage from old houses is way STRONGER AND DURABLE than what I get to buy now. DONOT miss the LOGOS of the amazing tile companies from Mangalore which manufactured these tiles over 100 yrs ago and they still stand strong.

This is how much effort it takes to reuse salvaged building material and reduce use of newer resources. Yes feel like a huge effort especially when ready made brand new beams rafters and mangalore tiles are available so easily .. but I always choose to recycle. The satisfaction is tremendous when you know that you have given a new life to something which would otherwise be burnt away or thrown away an debris and discarded as landfill rooflines

Salvaged old Burma teak wood frames , bought in wholesale, from demolished houses in and around Goa and Maharashtra , lying ignored in dump-yards, finally finds its final resting ground today . How many hands must have touched these frames … over 100 yrs of stories could be revisited if only they could talk and tell us all they have witnessed . This mature seasoned wood is restored and is getting ready to witness yet another 100 yrs…..stories yet to be told and yet to unfold !

I was just playing around with lime and laterite stone dust which I scraped from top of my laterite stones which came from a quarry … passing time on my site y’day …and I got this .. it’s rock solid now and doesnot have a single crack .. magical lime and even more magical is laterite ! What a beautiful natural color. No red oxide , no cement ….

Today my day was spent on the site making Structural interventions in this traditional old house. Introducing openings in these old walls and checking the walls for uneven settlement and stabilizing them . Using lime and mud mortar . Even the process is so beautiful . No need to wait for building to be finished to admire it. Load bearing structures look beautiful at Every step of its construction.

How to know if your lime mortar is a perfect binder for your stones ? Take it in your palm and turn it around , if it fights gravity and it stays stuck means it has good cohesive strength. This is achieved immediately on preparing the mortar with plain water but with well slaked lime soaking in tank for days . No jaggery or other additives are added yet ! This mortar when kept for days without coming in contact with air (CO2) gets even stronger in time! Use it as and when you like! After days or even months! Add additives only while putting it to actual use. Isn’t it magic? Lime indeed is a magical binder if given its due respect. Cement cannot even come close to what lime can do. Just some patience and a bit of process and you have gold in your hand. Walls built with such a mortar get “rock solid” as time passes.
