In ancient India, lemongrass was known as Bhustrina. For thousands of years, Ayurvedic practitioners utilized it to brew therapeutic teas for lowering fevers, soothing digestive distress, and treating respiratory issues. Its distinct, refreshing scent also made it a natural choice for early perfumery and insect repellents.

During the World War II, a global shortage of natural citrus oils led industries to turn heavily to lemongrass. Scientists extracted its citral to synthesize Vitamin A and create artificial violet scents (ionones) for the burgeoning global perfume market.
