There is no better friend to a small space than a well-placed mirror. Expanding walls, amplifying light, breaking up visual clutter, mirrors can be used to solve most any design dilemma.

Our latest design is a renovation project in Kannur with a contemporary and linear aesthetic. This was a low-budget project, without any major changes in the existing structure. A few design elements were added to the elevation to achieve this.

As the project is to be used as a guest house, it was decided that each floor will have it's own entrance from the outside. However, the client preferred to have a seamless elevation.

Each floor is a separate entity with their individual entrances from the outside, but it was preferred that the facade remain seamless.

The bridal room is an extension of the gifts given to the newly-weds by the family, a space for them to call their own.

In this project, the main challenge was to include all the client’s desired features into a 170 sqft room, without making it feel congested. We chose wall-mounted floating furniture pieces like the dressing table and side table, to minimise the floor-space utilised. The bed frame’s recessed base allows it to hover, along with the dressing and side tables.

One of the elements the client proposed is the dark teak wood paneling on the wall. We decided to blend the bathroom door within the same paneling, and also add some interest with a contrasting headboard.

The overall concept was to design a comfortable space, with a subtle type of richness. So, we chose light colours for the fabric and the wallpaper. We added gold tinted lighting fixtures, matched by the side table and handles. The accent chairs were chosen to give a pop of colour into the space.

The dressing area is a point where circulation into and away from the bathroom happens. It was important to avoid congestion in a space like that, so we chose a floating wall-mounted dressing table to save space.
We also placed a long mirror opposite the window in the room to make the space seem bigger.
Vertical and horizontal lines are once again used here for continuity.

Bridal room edition-
The first look into the space encompasses the entire composition, so it was important to find seating units that would blend in, but also stand out against the backdrop of muted color curtains.
The green fabric adds a pop of color, while the vertical lines reverberate with other design elements in the room.
The sleek golden legs - accompanied by gold accents in the side table - give the illusion of the chair hovering rather than placed firmly in the bulkiness of traditional wingback chairs.
