Maati an exclusive terracotta products brand conceptualised to offer unique terracotta products for home and garden. Started in 2004, Maati was conceptualised and is run by Shashi Bagchi whose idea was to showcase the range and depth of what baked earth – terracotta can offer. The idea was to create something new and unique in terracotta which would make people change their perception of this medi

um. Right from producing interesting pieces of art that adorn walls and living rooms to cooking utensils and garden ware, the potential of terracotta is exciting and vast. Sadly, this eco friendly medium is being replaced by cement and plastic products which may have better shelf life but are not environment friendly and also not healthy for the plants that grow in them. Lack of innovation in terracotta and the introduction of these new mediums have resulted in young potters shying away from this ancient form of art. As a result many potters who were tired of producing the same thing over and over again are enjoying a renewed interest in their profession. Her policy of not repeating designs and coming up with innovative ideas has got potters to challenge their own skill sets and earnings too. Each piece is handmade with a great deal of attention to detail. Since these products are not mass produced they take time to create and are only available in limited numbers.
