CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

Seen from behind the espresso machine, the frame shifts attention from the larger composition to a more tactile register.

The foreground equipment partially obscures the view, creating depth and placing the observer within the working zone of the café. Beyond it, a continuous banquette sits against a field of slender burnt clay tiles, where slight variations in tone and finish give the surface a handcrafted, almost earthen quality.

Brushed metal furniture introduces a cooler precision against the warmth of leather upholstery and fired clay.

A close study of contrast: crafted and industrial, matte and metallic, dense and delicate.

CALM COFFEE, Jayanagar by Studio Dashline

A long terracotta brick wall establishes the visual datum of this side of Calm.

Its narrow vertical modules create a subtle rhythm across the surface, giving the room texture without introducing ornament. Running beneath it, the built in bench stretches almost uninterrupted along the length of the wall, creating a generous shared seating zone that can accommodate different groupings through movable tables.

At the adjoining edge, the display shelving rises as a darker vertical insert, gathering books, ceramics and collected objects into a compact composition. The contrast between the ordered brick surface and the deeper shelving gives the elevation its character.

The result is a simple architectural backdrop where texture, repetition and proportion do most of the work.

At Calm, the courtyard is conceived as an interruption in the built volume.

Cut diagonally into the entrance, this planted void brings landscape directly into the interior experience while establishing a visual break from the street outside. The seating responds to the same geometry, with a continuous bench and table aligning themselves to the angled edge rather than imposing a conventional orthogonal arrangement.

From within the café, the courtyard reads almost like a framed landscape. Greenery catches the natural light beyond the glass, while the darker foreground creates a deliberate contrast between exterior brightness and interior depth.

A change in height subtly reorganises the interior at Calm.

The raised communal table introduces a more informal mode of occupation, positioned alongside the coffee counter rather than against the perimeter. Between the two, a narrow route is formed that leads towards the kitchen and washroom, allowing back-of-house movement to remain legible without becoming visually detached from the café.

Above, suspended volumes and concealed lighting reinforce the direction of the passage, while the counter continues to act as a spatial divider between service and seating.

Here, circulation is not treated as leftover space. It is shaped deliberately through furniture, mass and proportion, allowing movement and pause to coexist within the same frame.

The bay window seating becomes one of the most intimate moments within Calm.

Set into the façade, the seat draws the body towards daylight and the movement of the street beyond, while the surrounding walls create a sense of enclosure. Beside it, a vertical display shelf is integrated into the depth of the wall, holding ceramics, books and objects as a quiet collection rather than decoration.

The contrast is deliberate. Bright foliage and changing daylight sit against the darker interior, while the illuminated shelving introduces a warmer, more controlled glow. Together, the window, seat and display form a small inhabitable edge between the café and the city.

A place to sit close to the outside without leaving the interior.

Even the most utilitarian room at Calm is treated as part of the larger architectural narrative.

The washroom is reduced to a precise composition of planes, recesses and reflected surfaces. A sculpted basin rises from the vanity as a single geometric form, while the mirror extends the depth of the compact volume. Warm illumination is concealed above, grazing the textured surfaces and bringing out subtle shifts within the earthy palette.

There is no visual departure from the rest of the café. Material, detailing and atmosphere continue uninterrupted, allowing a functional space to carry the same level of intent as the public areas.

This view captures the first internal sightline at Calm, where the plan begins to reveal itself through a controlled narrowing of space.

On one side, the window ledge extends into integrated seating and display shelving. Opposite it, the coffee counter projects forward as a substantial volume, creating a defined channel between the two. The resulting gap is intentionally compressed, guiding the eye and the body deeper into the café before the plan opens out beyond.

Natural light enters along the façade and settles across the floor, while the darker counter mass establishes a strong visual boundary. Shelving, seating and service functions are folded into the architecture, allowing a compact area to perform several roles without feeling fragmented.

A small moment in the plan where circulation, occupation and function are shaped by the space between two architectural edges.

At Calm, the edges of the room are designed to hold moments of pause.

Perimeter seating is carved into the interior shell, forming a continuous horizon along the walls. Tables emerge as restrained slabs, while the display shelves sit recessed within the architecture, softly illuminated to reveal ceramics, books, and coffee artefacts from within the shadow.

At the edge, the monolithic coffee counter enters the frame, connecting these quieter moments back to the tectonic centre of the café.

Deep earth tones, textured surfaces, and subdued light bring each element into the same material language. Nothing seeks attention on its own. Furniture, objects, light, and architecture settle into a single composition.

A space designed not simply to be occupied, but to slow the rhythm of occupying it.

At the centre of Calm, the coffee counter becomes more than a point of service. It is the tectonic core of the space.

Carved as a singular architectural mass, its angular geometry redirects movement, anchors the interior, and folds the rituals of coffee making into the architecture itself. Deep earth tones, mineral textures, and surfaces that absorb light give the counter a sense of weight and permanence, while daylight enters quietly from the edge.

Here, architecture is shaped through subtraction. Planes are cut, volumes are fractured, and light is allowed to reveal only what is necessary.

A moment of equilibrium within the layered rhythm of Jayanagar.
