More people are becoming aware of the consequences of decades of living unsustainable, ploughing through mountains and oceans of resources and generating waste exponentially as part of the global rush to be ‘civilized’. Daily we see the consequences but many of us are not sure what to do to reduce our impact.

By reducing the toxicity of the products we use and conserving the most amount of power and water, we are contributing to a more natural, healthy environment for ourself and people around us. Natural resources are being harnessed to produce bio-friendly products for our environment. If we use more bio-friendly products, the market responds with more variety and more innovative items.

Approved Compostable Bags

Plain, uncoated (no shine) paper bags and compostable bags are good ways to contain and carry food scraps to your food and yard waste cart.

Compostable bags are made from plant-based materials that break down when composted. These bags are green or very pale green. They aren't plastic or black in color.

Don't put plastic and “biodegradable” bags in your food and yard waste bin:

• Plastic bags don't break down and will ruin the compost.

• Bags labeled “biodegradable” usually break down into small pieces, but aren't compostable.

BEAUTY OF BIOPLASTICS

Compostable plastic is a relatively new, environmentally friendly option for packaging material.

The world produces over 200 million tonnes of plastic each year. Most post-consumer plastic products are still not reused or recovered, but are dumped in landfills. In addition, any material recycling or energy recovery often compromise the environmental effects. One contribution to a more sustainable recovery of plastic waste might well be the use of compostable plastics. Products could then be recovered after use by composting or anaerobic
fermentation – though the latter currently has some limitations due to process technology.

Thus, a major proportion of the plastic waste stream could be re-integrated into the natural carbon cycle – with the special advantage of being carbon-neutral for those materials derived from renewable resources.

Use Compostable Bags in place of Plastic Bags.

Unlike standard plastic bags, and even some biodegradable plastic bags, compostable bags are made of vegetable matter, such as corn or potato starch. When exposed to enough moisture, the bags will compost, right along with whatever was placed inside them.

Standard biodegradable bags may just break down into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic. While this is better for the environment than a regular plastic bag, and biodegradable bags will never wind up in the ocean in a large piece, they can still contaminate the environment with plastic chemicals.

HP GREEN SOLUTIONS bags are both biodegradable and compostable, which is a key distinction. Just because a bag will degrade faster than standard plastic, does not make it compost ready.
