N. Gopala Row painted the “Uthra Abimanya” oil on canvas in 1929, another of his masterpieces. This painting was printed in Germany during the Second World War. The artwork was so well appreciated that the artist created another version, this time with Uthra’s eyes open.
The theme of “Uthra Abimanya” is drawn from the chapter “Virata Parvam” of the Mahabharata. The painting depicts the love between Uthra, the daughter of Virata Raja, and Abimanya, the son of Arjuna.
The painting is so well crafted that details like the folds of Uthra’s saree showcase the artist's imagination and the precision with which the painting has been constructed. The colors used in the portrait are also overwhelming and beautiful.
Sri Gopala Row was a great devotee of Lord Sri Krishna and painted many famous works, such as Gopikrishna, Mahavishnu, Sri Venkatadri, and other mythical paintings, including Kalinga Mardhini. He was a great admirer of flowers, and his paintings often featured florals in the background or foreground. This artist of rare genius allows us to see what is happening more clearly than any other painter has been able to convey through his works.
