As a part of the Singapore Heritage Festival, 2025, NPark conducted a series of workshops at the Fort Canning Park. “A Taste of the Ancient Garden” was a thematic workshop to spotlight the fruiting trees that once thrived in the orchards and gardens surrounding the royal palace of the Malay Kings who ruled Singapore in the 1300s.

The workshop highlighted the rich flora of Fort Canning Park, with dishes curated to help participants connect local produce to the historical and cultural era that forms the roots of their heritage.

Two dishes were prepared for the session—one savoury and the other sweet. Both were thoughtfully designed to be simple and easily replicable at home, encouraging participants to engage with the ingredients and stories beyond the workshop.

The session included a visual presentation that guided participants through the ingredients, enriched with symbolism and storytelling, enabling them to forge a deeper connection with the historical narrative.

Conducting the workshop was absolutely enjoyable and we thank all the participants who participated in it.

A special note of thanks to Sharon Tang and Elias from Cake Theatre for working with me on this.

Deepavali, the festival of lights, is a time for family, warmth, and, of course, delicious sweets. But for those aiming to celebrate with healthier treats that don’t compromise on flavor, the struggle is real! That’s why we created a special recipe for Sweet Potato Halwa, developed exclusively for at

This halwa checks all the boxes. We used Japanese sweet potatoes for their natural sweetness, so you can cut down on added sugars without losing that indulgent flavour. The result? A halwa that melts in your mouth, yet has just the right structure for a beautiful presentation.

To make it extra special, we shaped it to resemble a sweet potato, honouring its natural essence while adding a touch of artistry. It’s a dessert that’s not only delicious but also a conversation starter on your Deepavali table!

A huge thank you to the amazing DJs and the entire team at Oli 96.8 FM! Special shoutout to , , and for making food a fun, joyful part of Oli’s programming. Here’s to celebrating Deepavali with healthier, delightful sweets—and the warmth of family and friends.

While the recipe audio is in Tamil, we have the recipe posted in English on our blog (link in bio) : https://www.kechilkitchen.com/post/recipe-sweet-potato-halva
