In his quest as a creative person, Benny Kuriakose has travelled diverse paths and translated the philosophy of his mentor Laurie Baker many times over. A retrospective of his work reflects his perseverance to transform those same concepts of cost effectiveness, conservation and sustainable architecture, in several sequences, whether it be in his designs for personal or public spaces. BK's strict

adherence to the universal principles of architecture can be seen in the range of his work : in individual houses, resorts and institutional projects, in the Dakshinachitra project in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in the rehabilitation of disaster sites at Nagapattinam, Bhuj or Lattur and in the Heritage Project at Muziris in Kerala. Apart from being a professional with strong principles, Benny is a serious student and researcher. He readily shares his knowledge and expertise in his projects, his workshops and in his writings.

A low-slung, terracotta-tiled colonnade links distinct wings of the house, offering sheltered passage alongside a manicured lawn lined with stepping stones and pebble borders. The stone-pillar corridors frame vibrant views of lush tropical foliage, including banana trees and palms. A beautiful choreography of vernacular forms that invites the rhythms of the landscape into daily life.

The Huilekere House designed by Benny Kuriakose and Associates pays homage to Coorg Ainmane's centuries-old traditions. This is the view of the courtyards with long, polished slabs of wood fixed on low parapets called 'aimaras' that are given for seating. All the other rooms of this traditional house are designed to lead off the hallways around the courtyards.

The expansive verandah is sheltered by a sweeping, sloping terracotta-tiled roof, its intricate underside resting on a colonnade of dark, meticulously carved timber pillars with stone bases. Earth-toned plastered walls hold an antique, heavy wooden doorway, while a massive stone urli and a distant hanging swing anchor the linear space in cultural memory. The long, deep verandah features exposed brick walls, dark polished flooring, and a sloping wooden roof supported by sturdy timber pillars. Intricately patterned ceiling tiles add subtle textures, while vintage wooden furniture and warm, soft lighting create an inviting atmosphere. Opening directly onto a lush green courtyard, the space acts as a natural buffer from the city.

It is a thoughtful architecture where earthen textures and quiet shadows cultivate a sense of permanent sanctuary.

Reached by a rustic gravel driveway, the earth-toned structure stays close to the soil, nestled deeply within a dense embrace of tropical flora, native palms, and banana canopies. The sprawling footprint integrates shelter with open sky, establishing an understated presence that respects the openness of its site.

It stands as a silent dialogue between built form and nature, proving that true luxury lies in absolute harmony with the land.

Sheltered beneath a traditional terracotta tiled roof, the open-walled living space sits on robust wooden pillars, looking out across a still, reflective lily pond. The deep overhangs and dense tropical foliage cast cool, dappled shadows across the dark stone flooring, creating a microclimate of natural tranquility. Vintage lounge chairs and warm, low-level lighting inside invite slow living, while the surrounding greenery mirrors perfectly in the dark water.
