Drawing Hands Studio turns 10 this year!

The last decade has been filled with some wonderful opportunities, lovely people and a whole cartload of learning. From making the decision to start my own studio, figuring out the name, working out of coworking spaces, marriage, a kid, working from home, setting up an office, doing the great dance of balance (which is obviously still continuing :)) these 10 years have been nothing short of a roller coaster.

Immensely grateful to all our lovely clients who have trusted us with their spaces, grateful to the people who have been a part of the studio at various times and have played an integral part in taking us one step further, grateful to our vendors and contractors for their constant support and last but not the least, grateful to my family & close friends for being strong and supportive through all the ups and downs. Looking forward to the next eventful 10! [Post 1/2]

Drawing Hands Studio turns 10 this year!

The last decade has been filled with some wonderful opportunities, lovely people and a whole cartload of learning. From making the decision to start my own studio, figuring out the name, working out of coworking spaces, marriage, a kid, working from home, setting up an office, doing the great dance of balance (which is obviously still continuing :)) these 10 years have been nothing short of a roller coaster.

The Nested Roots Lamp : A homegrown product, this lamp is a symbol of the Nested Roots project - a reminder of the impact of mangroves in our environmental fabric. We have designed this as a 3D printed framework, wrapped in coir or rattan weave. The product lights up the space and casts striking shadows all around, reminding us of the strong and quiet presence of mangroves in our coasts.

Adyar House : The guest suite is a compact and comfortable space located away from the lounge. Giving a new face to the old storage units white tying them together with the rest of the space was a key feature. The old world vibe continues here echoing traces from English bungalows, within the space.

Storied spaces

Tucked away in the Marina city’s bustle, the home reveals itself like a Carnatic raga, timeless and soul-stirring. From the ground floor, a flight of stairs lead to the lounge, a room meant for unhurried conversations when tea cools slowly as you are lost in dusty pages of a well-thumbed book. Here books line the walls in uninterrupted ledges, walls finished in soft beige eco cement, softening the afternoon light that filters in. Heirloom furniture reupholstered, discreet storage that seamlessly doubles as a bench, the lounge is for pause, a space for stories.

Adyar House : Once a large open terrace, is now a cozy nook for dining, working etc. We decided to frame one of the two jaali windows for filtered light to come through, while also keeping the architectural language of the home intact. The dining seat doubles up as storage, has concealed sockets for quiet work or a sound system to be installed. A lovely picture window strategically placed near the dining completes the setting for a laid back atmosphere. Swipe to see the before image of the space.

Adyar House : “The essence of the design is to create a harmonious, relaxed lounge space that blends with the architectural language of the entire home.”
The place was an open terrace with one large room opening out from the staircase. The clients wanted a lounge space to entertain their guests and host informal parties. It also had to double up into a large play space for their young grandson.The design language prevalent in the house has been that of the late 80s Madras with attention to grill detail, intricate jaali patterns and sloped roofs. We chose to retain those and work them into our design. We were also asked to add a guest suite with a bathroom in addition to the lounge and pantry spaces. Swipe to see the before images.
