AKDA integrates the disciplines of architecture, interior design, sustainability, furniture, lighting and product design under a singular ethos. Established by Amit Khanna in 2004, the studio philosophy is to make regional specificity and sustainability intrinsic to the design process and product. Every object we produce, be it a 60,000SF office building or a 0.5SF light fixture, undergoes the sam

e scrutiny of process and exactitude; A process that is founded in suitable materiality and innovation, irrespective of appearance. The quest for absolute quality implies that we follow a unique system of design development; one in which we allow ourselves to learn and imbibe from the skills and experience of people who actually craft the buildings and objects that we design. Their early involvement acknowledges them as equal stakeholders in the process, and allows us as a studio, to better predict construction outcomes and quality control. The firm was chosen as one of only five architects among 20 designers in India under the age of 35 to exhibit work in February 2013 (DxD, Alliance Francaise). We were one of the Young Designers of 2013(IA&B), Superstars of Design in 2014 (Society Interiors) and were also selected as one of the top 50 emerging architects in India by iGEN Design Forum 2014. Our work has won numerous awards & has been published in architectural and design journals around the world. Current projects include commercial & industrial buildings, corporate offices, hospitality, boutique retail, multifamily housing, private houses & furniture.

How little does one need to make a home?

This 1000 sq ft. weekend home examines the fundamentals of habitation through three primary elements: garden, shelter, and the space in between.

The design evolves from the idea of transition: between open and enclosed, built and unbuilt, garden and shelter. The parti is resolved through a linear block and an overarching roof plane, establishing an architecture that responds to climate, light, and the rhythms of its site.

In its restraint lies its generosity, a reminder that architecture, at its most essential, is about creating space for life to unfold.

Amit Khanna | Speaker at ID Symposium 2024

An architect, urbanist and educator, Amit Khanna is the founder & principal designer at his eponymous studio (AKDA). He is dedicated towards integrating architecture, construction and sustainability, and has contributed to building award-winning, globally recognised properties. A published author and photographer, his area of expertise is in the transformation of cities. Having received his education from SPA & Oxford, he was recently featured in The Bold Club: The Design Next Gen Top 30 Under 40, by Forbes India, 2023.

A large formal living room was created in the basement, and a court was added for natural light and external access. Skylights bring in natural light, and open courts were created throughout the house to void out open space for daylight.

The rich tones of the furniture contrasted against the white scheme of the room make a bold statement in this large bedroom.

The seating space, tucked along the front balcony, is backed by a large window that expands the view from within.

Punctured with square windows, the horizontality provides a dramatic counterpoint to the verticality of the stair volume. A corner of this grey box was cut away on the front façade to reveal a shaded terrace as a private area for refuge and contemplation.

The little Lego brick has always been the perfect tool for exploring the fundamental ideas of architecture, enabling one to use their hands and imagination together. In the seven decades that it has been in production, nearly 400 billion Lego pieces have been manufactured, and even the most rudimentary collections of fundamental pieces can be put together in near-infinite patterns.

As architects, we often have to wait years to see our buildings manifest themselves, so a little tinkering with Lego can be joyful.

"A party wall on one side prevented openings along the length; therefore, several skylights of various dimensions and positions were introduced in the house to bring light deep into the interiors. As a result, the house is flooded with natural light. The location of the building on a busy road also meant that the building would have to protect the occupants from the noise and light pollution. This was done by restricting the number of external openings, however double-glazed units of glass were used to add light and take advantage of views above the tree crowns on upper floors. The interiors were integrated at the planning stage itself, since construction scheduling and planning was crucial to coordinate the various local and global vendors.

"The bare shell of the structure was inherited, but the clients were unhappy with the inappropriate three individual apartments within the structure meant for a small, but growing family. After 8 months of intense design and several months of careful demolition and construction later, the house was transformed to meet the requirements of the family to function as a single unit, yet afford privacy whenever required..
